Understanding Dashboard symbols

If you are a first time driver, then your dashboard might be a little intimidating especially if you have not undertaken any research to understand what each light means. It is therefore necessary to know what to expect and how to resolve it if your car gives you the indicator. New car information is available from your dealer but if you do not have that; then we will give you a few highlights below:

Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL):

When your dashboard lights up with this light, it means that the engine computer has set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). This will mean that you need to visit a service center to run a professional diagnosis of the ensuing problem.

Oil Pressure Warning:

When you see this light, you need to immediately check your car oil level and pressure and ensure that the problem is resolved before continuing to drive.

Battery/Charging Alert:

The battery alert means the voltage level is lower than normal. Usually the battery is automatically recharged when your car is on. In this case, it means the vehicle charging system is not in properly functional. You should check the battery terminals, the condition and the alternator belt.

Oil Change Reminder:

When the oil life in your car expires, the ECM monitor which takes the readings alerts you that you need to change the oil. Depending on your vehicle, you can reset the light based on the manufacturer’s manual or contact your service centre for assistance once the oil has been changed.

Reduced Power Warning:

When the power output from the engine is limited, the ECM alerts you. It is however necessary to have your engine professionally scanned to indicate which component of the engine power output is failing.

Security Alert:

The alert means the ignition switch needs to be unlocked a transponder-equipped key to unlock. The light may also show when the vehicle is already on and this means there is a security malfunction that needs to be reviewed.

Airbag Fault:

If there is a fault in the airbag, this light will show on your dashboard and it requires professional rectification.

Overdrive Light:

This light indicates that you have manually put off the overdrive system. This is usually an on/off button that you can immediately use.

Washer Fluid Reminder:

When the window washer fluid is low, this light will show and it resembles a windshield. All you need to do is refill the washer reservoir. If you have a separate one for the back window, remember to refill both.

Gas Cap:

When this one lights up, it means that the gas cap is loose and needs proper tightening. If you do not fix it, the Check Engine light might also come up.

It is necessary to do a car inspection before you drive off to ensure that you address any warnings and alerts on your dashboard.
