Dumped cars with dust all over them parked in a parking lot for years and back streets can be put to a better use after the UAE first ever recycling plant officially launched. The valuable metals will be extracted through the plant which will help recycle or reprocess the plastic, cables, upholstery and mechanical parts. It will also help reduce the amount of landfill. The capacity to recycle the old cars is much larger then we can imagine. The plant has already running for quite some time now and since then it has been through some tests. It has already recycled about 350 old cars.

The plant’s shredder equipment used to recycle car bodies has a capacity of shredding 60 cars in an hour. There are a large number of vehicles in UAE that are been recycling every day. A report says about 11,000 vehicles reach the end of their lives each month. Old vehicles used to be sold to car scrapping dealers who would salvage the spare parts and sell the rest of the car in the market. This facility is for car dealers, insurance company and whoever dealing with end of vehicle’s life.

The procedure for recycling the cars in the plant is to manually dismantle the car first like their tires, plastic and other mechanical equipments, and then they recycled the rest of the car afterwards.

Workers separate the important parts of the car like engine, transmission systems and cables which will be then handed over to electronic waste trader and all the cushioning too which can be recycled, the company then sold it out to the car market or used them to another car. The windows of the car are finely grounded. The car body when shredded machine separates non metallic parts from valuable aluminum and steel, recycling them is environmentally beneficial.

Recycling consumes less energy and less water than producing virgin materials to use in a car; the officials are already in contact with government department to ensure the unclaimed vehicles in several areas can be handed over to them to recycle. Car insurance companies and car dealer can get most of the advantage from recycling. The recycling facility is technically running well and a key to success is to make sure the supply would remain steady and all the cars which are not being used for several years can be processed.
