Oliver George moved one step closer to taking his first DD2 Championship title this weekend at the Al Forsan circuit in Abu Dhabi. However, the British star’s success was in jeopardy as his gearbox started disintegrating from mid-distance. With every passing lap the sound of grinding metal got worse and as a result George started to slow. Frenchman Arnaud Bouf closed up but George held on to win in a nail-biting finale that has seen him pull clear of Sanad Al Rawahi in the points table.
Abdullah Al Rawahi came from behind to beat Philippe Valenza in the 125 MAX class, and Ameer Hassan who came home third. Title contender Piers Pakenham-Walsh was the unfortunate victim in a first lap incident and was forced into retirement, but it was the misfortune of the championship leader that changed the overall picture in the points table. Alexandre Silanines’ rotten luck continued as he was forced to start from the back after a mechanical failure in the pre-final.
In the Junior MAX class, Tom Bale came from last on the grid to beat both Pasqual Pook and Taymour Kermanshahchi in a thrilling battle that saw the three drivers cross the line only one second apart. The Mini MAX class was yet again won by Tehmur Chohan who held off Alain Bauwmans. Sem Knopjes was again victorious in the Micro MAX class.
