After a bad year for road safety situation in 2016, the traffic law was amended and the new traffic law was implemented in the UAE on July 1, 2017. In the amended traffic law, the penalties for dangerous traffic violations were increased after the authorities decided to take a tougher stance to discourage motorists from committing traffic violations.

Traffic authorities recognized reckless driving as a major reason behind dangerous road accidents and amendments were made in the traffic law to improve the road safety situation in the UAE. As a result, the fines for some traffic violations were increased significantly as these violations depicted the reckless driving behavior of motorists and posed the highest risk to the safety of other motorists.

Brief Summary of the Amended Traffic Rules in the UAE

The traffic law has been amended to improve the road safety situation in the UAE. An increase in repeated reckless driving mistakes by motorists was observed by authorities after which recommendations were made to maximize scrutiny of the traffic violations and discourage motorists from committing dangerous violations. The traffic fines and black points for traffic violations were increased considerably in the newly amended traffic law and the authorities also made some major changes in the way different violations were classified. While some related traffic violations were merged together, some new traffic violations were also introduced.

New policies were also implemented for some of the most dangerous traffic violations including over-speeding and seatbelt violations. All these developments demanded a change in the mindset of motorists to avoid intentional or unintentional driving mistakes that could put the lives of other commuters at a serious risk and disrupt the flow of traffic.
