The Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has exempted minor traffic violations from vehicle impounding. The latest move is a part of the “Year of Giving” initiative announced by the President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The overall rules for impoundment of vehicles have been changed in the Dubai, which will relieve the motorists as they will be able to avoid vehicle impounding over minor violations.

Violations Exempted from Impounding of Vehicles
According to the new law, not only some minor violations have been exempted from impounding but some other important changes have also been made. In the light of the changed rules, the vehicles which have completed their impounding period will be readily released after the checking the motorist’s record to whom these vehicles belong.
Motorists will not be facing impounding of their vehicles if they are found guilty of the following violations:
- Expired Registration of the vehicles will be penalized but the vehicle will not be impounded.
- If the Driving License needs to be renewed and the motorist is found guilty of not getting it renewed in time then the motorist will face penalties but the vehicle will not be impounded.
- Vehicles with expired insurance will not be impounded.
- Impounding of the car will not take place over a flat tyre.
The new changes have been implemented from Monday April 24, 2017 and steps will be taken immediately after the implementation of the new rules to release vehicles that have been impounded for minor violations. The Dubai Police Assistant Commander-in-Chief for operations, Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen advised the owners of the vehicles who had their vehicles impounded for minor traffic violations to approach the General Directorate of Traffic in Bur Dubai or Deira in order get their vehicles released.
Violations that are not exempted from Vehicle Impounding
Fatal traffic violations will still be dealt strictly and motorists will face the impounding of their vehicles along with other serious penalties. Reckless driving behavior of motorists is a reason for serious injuries and road deaths in Dubai and in order to discourage such a behavior, impounding of vehicles is a critical penalty.
