Tailgating is one of the most dangerous traffic violations that can lead to serious road accidents. The Abu Dhabi Police has taken several initiatives to eliminate the risk of tailgating accidents. These initiatives include road safety awareness campaigns and the launch of state-of-the-art radars. The advanced radars were activated last year on several Abu Dhabi roads for improving traffic surveillance and to catch the tailgaters more effectively.

As many as 19,327 tailgaters were issued fines with the help of smart radars, which ultimately helped reduce the tailgating violations in the emirate. According to authorities, a significant drop has been observed is tailgating accidents during the first six months of 2021.

Official Statement

Captain Engineer Mohammed Al Esai, the Director of the Traffic Studies and Research of the Abu Dhabi Police, stated that the smart radar technology was activated in the emirate with an aim to improve the road safety situation and to particularly reduce tailgating accidents. These radars were activated on all major roads and highways of the largest emirate of the UAE to ensure the safety and well-being of the commuters.

After the activation of the smart radars, a significant improvement has been observed in the road safety situation. According to Abu Dhabi Police, tailgating accidents reduced by 54% in the emirate from January to June 2021. In addition to this, a reduction in road injuries (86%) and fatalities (75%) was also observed during the same period.

According to Mohammed Al Esai, the smart system automatically monitors motorists who fail to leave a safe distance between vehicles and sends them warning messages. He said that tailgating is a serious violation that is mostly a result of negligent driving behavior. Failing to leave a safe distance between vehicles can increase the risk of rear-end collisions involving multiple vehicles. He warned motorists against committing this dangerous violation and reminded them of the penalties that include a hefty fine.

Penalties for Tailgating in the UAE

The smart radar system has been designed to catch traffic offenders automatically. It not only detects the tailgater but also the drivers who drive too slowly in fast lanes and do not allow the right of way to the fast-approaching vehicles. In such a scenario, both drivers are issued a tailgating fine of AED 400 and 4 black points are issued against their driving licenses.

Driving too slow in the fast lane can increase the risk of tailgating accidents. There is a particular speed limit that needs to be followed, especially when driving on highways. A slow driver can disrupt the smooth flow of traffic, which can even increase the risk of dangerous road situations. It is the responsibility of all motorists to understand and follow the traffic rules to avoid dangerous road accidents.

New Car Technologies that Can Help Avoid Tailgating

Technology has helped the Abu Dhabi Police in reducing tailgating accidents. However, motorists can also benefit from the new auto technologies that can help avoid dangerous traffic violations such as tailgating. Adaptive Cruise Control System is one such advanced driver-assistance technology that helps in keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. There are other features also available in modern-day cars that can even help avoid a fatal crash with the vehicle ahead by applying emergency brakes automatically. Forward Collision Control with Emergency Braking is the driver-assistance technology that can help avoid dangerous rear-end collisions.
