RTA to Introduce a New Service for Converting an Automatic Transmission Driving License to Manual

RTA has launched a new service for motorists to get their automatic transmission driving license converted to a license for manual transmission in the “light vehicle category”. This is a new and unique initiative by the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai to facilitate the motorists who are interested in converting their driving licenses to drive a manual transmission vehicle legally.

How the New RTA Service will Benefit Motorists?

The process of getting a driving license in Dubai is quite lengthy and complicated. It includes lectures, a theory test, training sessions and a road test that needs to be passed before an applicant is issued a driving license in Dubai. The whole practice usually takes a little over three months and even more if the applicant fails and reappears for the road test.

In order to save the time and effort of motorists and to improve the scope of its services, RTA has now launched a system that will not require automatic transmission driving license holders to go through the training sessions and theory test. The drivers will just have to appear for the road test and pass it in order to get their driving license converted to manual transmission license.

Protocols for the Road Test

The protocols for the road test in the new service will fundamentally remain the same, but the test will be a little less difficult as compared to the road test for drivers applying for a driving license for the first time. The road test will not just be about the driving skills, but it will also be based on a driver’s ability to handle the manual transmission vehicle. The examiner will observe how easily the driver shifts the gears and if the driver can confidently maneuver between the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals. Even if someone fails the road test, the authorities will provide feedback and instructions on the areas to improve so that the driver doesn’t repeat the mistakes when he/she reappears for the test.

Why Converting the Driving License is Essential for Automatic Transmission Drivers?

The driving license for automatic transmission vehicles is not valid for driving a manual transmission vehicle in Dubai. Motorists in Dubai who plan to switch from an automatic transmission vehicle to a manual transmission vehicle must first get their driving license properly converted by availing the RTA’s new service. It is essential because driving a manual transmission vehicle is completely different from driving an automatic transmission vehicle.

In manual transmission vehicles, the driver needs to focus on the road and surroundings while making the right moves to change the gear and use clutch, brake and accelerator pedals as per need. The automatic transmission doesn’t involve the manual shifting of gears and manual use of clutch pedal, thus it makes driving quite easy. Due to the increased difficulty levels in manual transmission driving, RTA has made it necessary to convert an automatic transmission driving license to manual one by passing the road test.

When Will the New Service Start?

The new service by RTA for the conversion of driving license will start from October 2017. RTA, with its new service, aims to streamline the process of getting an automatic transmission driving license converted to manual transmission driver license and facilitate its customers in the best possible way.
