Road and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai has always put forward initiatives for the care of the people with special needs and continues to suggest amendments in the federal laws for their welfare.  The Roads and Transport Authority keeps coming with new ideas and strategies to facilitate disabled community by arranging meetings and conferences to keep all the stakeholders involved in the process.

With an initiative to make Dubai a disabled-friendly city by 2020, the 63rd session of the RTA Customer Council was recently arranged with the theme of “unlimited facilities for disabled” at the Dubai Club.

As per the policy, special needs of the disables were identified during the session. People with special need remained the focus of discussion.

Meeting Agenda and Video Demonstrations

The Chairperson of the RTA Customer Council Obaid Al Mulla kick-started the session with his words; “Such communication would ease and boost the “My Community – A Place for All” and expressed his gratitude towards the RTA’s Customers Council for disabled.

The agenda of the meeting was to highlight the services offered by RTA for the welfare of disables and to ask for the suggestions from authorities and disable people for the improvements wherever needed.

Video Demonstration for the Services offered by RTA for Disables

Video demonstration at the start of the meeting outlined the quality services that RTA provides for people with special needs. Special need facilities highlighted in the presentation were:

  • The floors in Metro stations that have metal studs; specially designed for visually impaired people
  • Buses of RTA facilitating people with disabilities by providing verbal instructions for those who cannot read and offering wheelchairs at different bus stations
  • Audio-visual announcements at metro stations for guidance and notifications for people with audio/visual impairments
  • Specially designed vehicles of Awnak service for disabled and chronically sick individuals
  • 50 % discount on driver licensing facilities and allocating the most convenient parking spaces for free
  • Appointing employees with special needs in different sectors of RTA
  • Easy Taxi Booking and other Essential Online Services

Member of the board of Executive directors and Chairperson of the RTA Customer‘s Council Mohammad Obaid Al Mulla, CEO of Public Transport Agency Abdullah Yousef AL Ali and CEO of Dubai Taxi Corporation Yousef Al Ali were the members of RTA who attended the meeting.  Directors and managers of RTA from other segments and agencies also joined the conference. From Dubai Club, The Executive Director of the club Majid Al Osaimi, and Ahmed Hassan Nassir a member of the board was the attendees. A number of disabled persons were also present at the meeting.

Modified Taxicabs for Disables Announced by RTA

According to estimation by RTA, 87% of disabled people are satisfied with RTA services and 92 % of disabled RTA employees are satisfied with their jobs at present. Road and Transport Authority also considered the number of suggestions in the meeting and announced its objective to modify the design of taxicabs to provide maximum ease to disabled people and to increase the number of taxis for people with special needs.
