Rolls-Royce has finally unveiled the 8th generation Phantom, the brand’s flagship car, after a gap of 14 years and will be the second Phantom to be launched after BMW acquired the British luxury brand. Claimed to be the most silent car in the world, the all-new Phantom VIII sets a luxury statement that lives up to the Rolls-Royce reputation. The Phantom was originally launched in 1925 and since then, it has enjoyed the status of being the emperor of luxury cars. The new Phantom gives the feel of a penthouse running on wheels and boasts sheer elegance in its design.

During the unveiling of Phantom, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos called it an icon, an artwork and a dominant symbol of wealth and human achievement. He was of the view that the new Phantom embodies the image of a true luxury vehicle that delivers amazing performance with top-of-the-line specifications and technological features.

Here’s a look at why there’s so much hype around this new luxury vehicle.

Design of Phantom VIII

The designers at Rolls-Royce have designed this car in a way that it doesn’t only look modern and lavish, but also upholds its classic grandeur. It boasts of distinctive Phantom looks with a few tweaks that have added more subtlety to an already exquisite design. It still has the sharp corners and edges that are a characteristic feature of its design and differentiates it from the other cars in the Rolls-Royce line-up.

The vehicle is long and enormous, when compared to other vehicles, it can easily outsize even the largest SUVs available in the market.  For instance, in a bumper-to-bumper length comparison, Phantom VIII is 3 inches longer than Chevrolet Suburban which is one of the longest SUVs in the market. The front-end of the vehicle now boasts of a more authoritative and imposing stance with some fine design improvements. The new laser headlights are stylishly designed and artistically fitted along the sides of the distinctive Rolls-Royce Grille. The trademark stainless steel grille is wider, taller and well-proportioned to express true “Spirit of Ecstasy” and luxury.

The back of the car is longer than Phantom VII and the rear glass is more generously positioned than before. The designers at Rolls-Royce have tried to achieve a Yacht-like profile for the new Phantom as it leans backwards with body lines and curves running rearwards from the front, thus giving a truly majestic look to the vehicle. The 22-inch alloy wheels are standard in both trims and complete the luxurious appeal of the vehicle.

Interior of Phantom VIII

Talking about the interior of the Phantom, the interior has been designed in accordance with the preferences of the esteemed Rolls-Royce customers. As a standout feature, the entire dashboard is covered in a single piece of Gorilla Glass for the first time in the history of Rolls-Royce vehicles. This glass can be adorned with unique artworks to make the interior more engaging, personalized and welcoming.

The interior is a true embodiment of convenience and luxury as it gives a calm and personalized feel to the passengers. The luxury car brand has offered a number of advanced technological features for the dashboard cluster that customers can customize according to their taste for a more pleasing in-cabin experience. All screens on the dashboard can disappear to make the dashboard panel look quiet and classy and Rolls-Royce has added a heads-up display as a standard feature to reduce the need for information to be displayed on the instrument cluster.

The interior also features luxurious heated front seats and heated front door armrests. The luxury and comfort of the interior is class apart as even tall men and women wearing hats can enter without the fear of hitting their head or hat on the doorframe. The rear seats recline almost flat, while the headrest provides a soft cushion for a comfortable driving experience. There are some amazing entertainment options available for rear passengers in the shape of high-gloss picnic tables, chrome dials and large screens behind the front seats that gives the feel of a movie theatre to rear passengers.

A Quiet Driving Experience

Phantom VIII is being labelled as the most silent car in the world. Rolls-Royce has spent a lot of time and resources into making sure that the vehicle maintains its quietness even at high speeds. There is 130 kilograms worth of sound deadening material and 6mm thick double layers of glazing used across the vehicle that has made it 10% quieter than Phantom VII at 60mph. There is an analogue clock in the dashboard, which according to Rolls-Royce will be the loudest sound you can hear in the cabin of Phantom VIII. Even the doors don’t slam shut and that augments the quieter appeal of the vehicle even further.

Performance of Phantom VIII

Rolls-Royce has discontinued the naturally-aspirated 6.75-litre engine of the previous model and has opted for a new twin turbocharged V12 engine that produces 563 horsepower and an impressive 900Nm of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed ZF gearbox and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds.

Performance of Phantom VIII

The chassis of the 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII is being called the “Architecture of Luxury” as the entire frame is made of all-aluminium spaceframe structure, which is being introduced for the first time in Phantom VIII and will be used in all future Rolls-Royce cars. This new frame gives more strength and rigidity to the vehicle without adding too much to its weight.
