The fatalities recorded in road accidents fell significantly last year according to the latest traffic stats released by Abu Dhabi Police. A decrease of 4.2% was recorded in road fatalities during 2018 while the number of serious road accidents also decreased significantly. Traffic Authorities in Abu Dhabi now aim at further reducing the number of road deaths by the end of 2019. Abu Dhabi Police is working in collaboration with other traffic authorities to achieve the road safety targets of the Traffic Safety Plan 2016-2020. The ultimate objective of this traffic safety plan is to decrease road deaths by 5.5% per 100,000 inhabitants by 2020.

Several road safety campaigns have been launched under the Traffic Safety Plan 2016-2020, which has helped in raising awareness about traffic rules and safe driving practices. The decrease in road fatalities is a positive outcome of the collaborated efforts of Abu Dhabi Police and other traffic authorities.

Official Statement

Speaking at an awareness lecture arranged by the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research, Major Abdul Rahman Al Shamsi, Head of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety at the Abu Dhabi Police, revealed that the road safety situation had improved significantly during the last 10 years (2009-2018). He revealed that road accidents and fatalities decreased by 87% between 2009 and 2018. He attributed the decrease in road accidents and fatalities to the effective use of traffic control systems that had evolved significantly over the period.

Addressing the attendees about the progress of road safety initiatives taken by the Abu Dhabi Police, Major Abdul Rahman Al Shamsi added that the traffic authorities were on track for achieving the road safety targets of Traffic Safety Plan 2016-2020. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness amongst drivers and pedestrians about unsafe practices that can lead to fatal road accidents.

According to traffic authorities, a few dangerous traffic violations have been identified as the major reasons behind fatal road accidents recorded in Abu Dhabi. These dangerous violations include speeding, tailgating, sudden swerving, violating seatbelt rules, distracted driving and jumping the red signal.

How the Road Safety Situation Has Improved in Abu Dhabi?

Several timely initiatives taken by the traffic authorities in Abu Dhabi have helped improve the road safety situation. The implementation of the new traffic law, changes made to the seatbelt policy and changes in speed buffers are some of the most significant steps taken by traffic authorities to achieve the road safety targets.

Additionally, the installation of smart traffic monitoring radars and speed cameras has helped in raising traffic monitoring standards. The intelligent radars and other monitoring devices can even record minor violations to nab down traffic offenders more effectively.

Bottom-line

The road safety situation in Abu Dhabi is improving by the day, thanks to the untiring efforts of Abu Dhabi Police. However, the risk posed by reckless driving behavior of motorists is still a major concern. According to authorities, the lack of familiarity with traffic rules is a major reason behind traffic violations committed by motorists. It is important for motorists to actively participate in the traffic awareness programmes launched by authorities so that they can avoid unintentional driving mistakes that can prove to have fatal consequences.
