Fatalities drop from 84 last year to 79, injuries from 663 to 626
Deaths and injuries because of road accidents have declined in Sharjah, according to the latest statistics.
The traffic report released recently showed the number of fatalities and serious injuries in accidents had come down in the first nine months of this year by almost 10 per cent as compared to the same period last year.
This was the result of the traffic awareness campaigns and strict enforcement of the rules carried out in active follow up from the Ministry of Interior, said Brigadier Mubarak Al Dukhan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police.
Fatalities dropped from 84 in the first nine months of 2012 to 79 this year — drops of 9.5 per cent — while the number of people who suffered serious injuries in accidents decreased from 663 last year to 626.
The number of fatal and horrific accidents that caused serious injuries was 471 from January to September as compared to 524 accidents last year. This year’s accidents included 245 incidents of collision because of speeding as compared to 289 last year — a drop of 15.2 per cent. The number of run over accidents decreased from 171 last year to 164, while that of overturning leading to fatalities and serious injuries declined by 5.6 percent to 45 from last year’s 53.
Brigadier Al Dukhan stressed that members of the public are the strategic partners in implementing the safety and security plans. The success of any plans would not happen without the cooperation of the public. “Safety is a collective responsibility.”
He directed all departments at the Sharjah Police to follow up the strategic plans of the ministry and strive to meet its objectives to reduce the number of accidents to the minimum and ensure the safety of all road users.
