According to the new traffic report released by the Abu Dhabi Police, a significant improvement was observed in the road safety situation during 2018. The traffic report of 2018 clearly reveals that the number of road accidents and their subsequent road deaths and injuries decreased significantly during 2018 as compared to 2017.

- Road deaths decreased from 199 to 149, marking a percentage decrease of 25.125%.
- The number of major injuries reported in road accidents decreased from 149 to 120, highlighting a decrease of 19.46%.
- The number of road deaths per 100,000 residents recorded a percentage drop of 26.22% as fatalities decreased from 5.72 per 100,000 residents to 4.22 per 100,000 residents.
- The number of major injuries per 100,000 residents recorded a percentage drop of 21.46% as injuries decreased from 4.286 per 100,000 residents to 3.366 per 100,000 residents.
- The number of road deaths caused by run-over accidents decreased by 38% in 2018.
The road safety situation improved significantly during 2018, which can be attributed to the efforts of authorities who adopted a tougher stance against traffic offenders and took initiatives to ensure the safety of all commuters. Major General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director of the Central Operations Sector of the Abu Dhabi Police, said that the decline in road accidents attributes to the success of Traffic Safety Strategy 2016-2020 that was launched in collaboration with the Department of Transport, Department of Municipality and Planning, the Department of Health and the Department of Knowledge.
He mentioned that authorities were able to achieve their road safety objectives in 2018 by adopting unified standards in critical areas such as Police aviation, traffic safety, ambulance and rescue services and crisis and disasters management.
Major General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri highlighted the efforts of Abu Dhabi Police and appreciated their role in implementing proactive plans to deal with challenging situations. He said that Abu Dhabi Police has developed state-of-the-art traffic monitoring and control systems that have helped in preparing plans for crises and disasters.
