Public transport in the United Arab Emirates

Mr. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority said that the number of public transport buses users in the past year amounted to 115 million and 670 thousand and 587 passengers compared to about 107 million and 800 thousand passengers in 2012 where the number of buses users is about 321 thousand passengers daily compared to 299 thousand passengers in 2012. The number of users for the marine transport which include ferries, water bus, water taxi and ferry Dubai last year is nearly 13 million and 223 thousand passengers with the same amount for 2012 where the ferries captured the lion’s share of the passengers for this method where the ferries were able to transport about 12 million passengers and the rest is distributed between the water bus, water taxi and ferry Dubai.

Mr. Mattar Al Tayer mentioned that the total number of passengers in taxis (Dubai Taxi and the private companies) last year amounted to about 174 million and 18 thousand passengers compared to 137 million and 390 thousand passengers in 2012 while the number of Dubai Taxi users owned by the RTA is about 72 million and 167 thousand passengers and the number of taxis users owned by the private companies is about 101 million and 850 thousand passengers.

Mr. Mattar Al Tayer was very pleased with these indicators that confirm the effectiveness of the plans and programs implemented by the commission in providing various alternatives for the movement of the population in Dubai, adding that the strategic plans for roads and transport which operates with the RTA’s standards that focus on the “Integration” principle.

This principle means that authority can achieve streamline and ease of movement in the emirate in order to provide integrated solutions include the development and expansion of road networks in addition to the development of mass transit systems such as Metro, buses and marine transport plus the development of traffic and transportation technology needed to achieve the best use and highest efficiency for roads and mass transit as well as the implementation of policies to limit the sub-total dependence of the public on private vehicles and increase their dependence on the other means and methods of transportation in the country in addition to the participation in trips especially in a city like Dubai where each resident has more than one car and this is a normal case in Dubai.
