Electric Vehicles (EVs) are clearly transforming the outlook of the automotive industry with their zero carbon emission technology, exhilarating speed and superlative performance attributes. Earlier, the electric cars were not regarded as superfast machines and associating a speed record with EVs was almost beyond imagination. But times have changed and so has the automotive engineering potential for electric cars.

NIO EP9, an autonomous all-electric Hypercar clearly stunned everyone when against all the odds, it broke the fastest Nurburgring Lap record for road legal cars on May 12, 2017. For an all-electric road legal car to achieve such speeds is certainly extraordinary and NIO EP9 not only bettered its own previous Nurburgring Lap record but also smashed the long-held fastest Nurburgring lap record of SR8 LM.

Record-breaking Run by NIO EP9 Electric Hypercar

NIO EP9 had earlier completed the Nurburgring Lap in 7 minutes and 5.12 seconds but on Friday, May 12, 2017, it completed the lap in just 6 minutes and 45.9 seconds and made the world record for the fastest Nurburgring lap. NIO EP9 all-electric hypercar has even left behind the likes of Mercedes-AMG all-electric SLS in its record-breaking run as the Mercedes-AMG all-electric SLS had completed the Nurburgring lap in 7 minutes and 56.23 seconds.

How NIO EP9 Electric Hypercar Broke the Nurburgring Lap Record?

In order to break the Nurburgring Lap record, the NIO EP9 Electric Hypercar was slightly modified. The EP9 already boasts some impressive specs in its production version, but a major change was made to the tyres of the vehicle. The NIO EP9 all-electric Hypercar was equipped with Bespoke Tyres, which were specially designed to help NIO EP9 in maintaining maximum stability at extreme speeds by optimizing the downforce levels of the car more efficiently.

This was not the first time when NIO EP9 completed such a fast lap on a race track and turned heads with its breathtaking speed. It had also completed the COTA (Circuit of the Americas in Texas) Lap in just 2 minutes and 40.33 seconds and that too in the autonomous mode.

What Makes the NIO EP9 Electric Hypercar a Real Superfast Machine

NIO is the sub-brand of a Chinese electric car company NextEV. The company revealed its NIO EP9 all-electric Hypercar for the first time at London Art Gallery on November 21, 2016. With its sleek body design, exhilarating speed attributes, autonomous mode and road legal nature, this hypercar by NIO is simply-put, a masterpiece.

At the time of its revealing, NextEV claimed the NIO EP9 as the fastest all-electric car in the world and EP9 justified its potential as a speed-machine when it broke the record for the fastest lap at the Nurburgring race track. Along with a breathtaking design, the EP9 boasts a high-performance powertrain that generates One MegaWatt of power which is equivalent to 1341bhp. It accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just 2.7 seconds which is just mind-blowing for a road legal sports car. If that’s not fast enough, the car actually holds the record for fastest rate of acceleration from 0 to 186mph in just 15.9 seconds.
