New Traffic Campaign Launched to Highlight the Risks of Sudden Swerving

Sudden swerving is one of the major traffic violations in the UAE. Over-speeding, lane swerving, tailgating and distracted driving have caused maximum number of road deaths in the UAE in recent times. Out of these violations, sudden swerving is potentially more dangerous than others because it can totally disrupt the flow of traffic and can result in multiple collisions between the vehicles in different lanes at the same time. Considering the fatal consequences of this violation, the Ministry of Interior in the UAE have started a new campaign by posting a video on its Twitter Handle that is aimed at building awareness among motorists about the risks of sudden swerving.

Details of the New Campaign Launched by the Ministry of Interior

In a new campaign to aware motorists about the fatal consequences of sudden swerving and how it potentially affects the flow of traffic on a road, the Ministry of Interior posted a short video on its Twitter Handle. The campaign is launched with the come_on hashtag.

It can be clearly seen in this video that a car suddenly jumped from the right lane to the fastest lane on the left, which increased the danger of a collision between multiple vehicles in the middle lane and fast approaching vehicles in the fast left lane. The vehicle jumped into the fast lane without indicating, thus it gave no time to other vehicles to respond in time.  Such situations can be extremely dangerous and can cause serious injuries and road deaths. The risk of a side impact crash and rear-end collision increases when a vehicle jumps from one lane to another without indicating.

The other part of the video shows the right way to move from one lane to another. It shows that a vehicle should first properly indicate it to other drivers and then wait for the other lane to get free before making any move towards the faster lanes. Once the faster lanes are empty, the driver can easily make a safe move towards these lanes.

Facts and Figures about Sudden Swerving in the UAE

In first six months of 2017, 315 people lost their lives in road accidents and sudden swerving caused the maximum number of road deaths, that’s 63 road deaths among other fatal traffic violations. Poor assessment of road users caused 56 road deaths, over-speeding caused 37 deaths, tailgating resulted in 37 road deaths and lack of attention while driving caused 30 road deaths.

It clearly highlights that sudden swerving has been the number one reason for fatal road accidents in the first six months of 2017. The dangers of sudden swerving can never be ignored and reckless driving must be avoided to save all commuters from a serious life threat.

Objective of the New Campaign

The overall number of road accidents in the first six months of 2017 decreased to 2,133 accidents from 2,520 accidents recorded in the same period of 2016. It marks a decrease of 15.35%, which is highly encouraging for traffic authorities who have continued to make efforts in reducing dangerous traffic violations in the UAE.

The new campaign is aimed at providing awareness to motorists about driving safely and indicating to other drivers before moving from one lane to another. The ultimate objective of the authorities is to bring down the road deaths to three persons per 100,000 residents by the year 2021. The traffic authorities have also increased the penalties for sudden swerving in the newly amended traffic law. There is now a fine of AED 1,000 that motorists can face for sudden swerving, while 4 black points will be issued against their driving license for this violation.
