Abu Dhabi Police has introduced a new radar technology to improve the traffic monitoring standards in the emirate. The radars across the emirate have been equipped with the latest Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology that primarily helps in detecting vehicles with expired registration. While the new technology has added to the monitoring arsenal of Abu Dhabi Police, it has created a confusion amongst many motorists who have been flashed by radars despite not committing any traffic violation.
Motorists have complained to authorities that they did not break any traffic rule and were still flashed by the radars. Authorities have looked into this matter and issued a statement to clear the doubt of motorists about the newly introduced traffic monitoring technology.

Official Statement on the New Radar Technology
Traffic authorities have advised motorists not to be confused about being flashed by the radars. Abu Dhabi Police has posted a statement on its Twitter Handle in which the fundamental function of the new radar technology has been explained. According to Abu Dhabi Police, the new features introduced in the radars installed across the emirate include reading vehicle number plates, monitoring the flow of traffic and counting the number of vehicles on the road.
The authorities have also categorically stated that the flashlight produced by the ANPR camera is not for the purpose of catching speeding offenders. It means that motorists who have been flashed by the radars will not face speeding penalties. Authorities have, however, urged motorists to follow traffic rules and comply with road safety practices.
Authorities have also asked motorists to check their fines before complaining about being flashed by the radars. While not much has been revealed about the purpose of data collected by the cameras in the tweet posted by Abu Dhabi Police, a Dubai based Technology Company, Omnitec Group has confirmed that the ANPR technology helps in identifying vehicles with expired registration.
Why Has the New Radar Technology Created a Confusion Amongst Motorists?
Normally, the radars in Abu Dhabi flash motorists whenever they violate the maximum speed limit of a road. This is the primary reason why being flashed by the new radars has created a confusion amongst motorists who had not violated the speed limit.
Motorists have become more cautious of their vehicle’s speed while driving after the removal of the grace speed limit from Abu Dhabi roads last month. The 20 Km/h buffer speed limit was removed from all internal and external Abu Dhabi roads in an effort to reduce speeding violations and to manage the flow of traffic more efficiently. Being flashed by the radars has raised concerns amongst motorists that they might have to face hefty speeding penalties, which were increased tremendously in the recently amended traffic law.

How Can You Check Your Traffic Fines?
Traffic authorities in Abu Dhabi have shifted most of their services to digital platforms. This has helped motorists avail most of the registration and licensing related services through Abu Dhabi Police Smart App and through the website of Abu Dhabi government. Motorists can also check and pay their traffic fines through these two digital channels. Since it is quite easy to check traffic fines through Dubai Police App and the Abu Dhabi government website, authorities have asked motorists to make sure that they check their fines before lodging a complaint about being flashed.
Avoid Speeding Violations Motorists!
Since the concern about being flashed by radars has been answered by authorities, motorists should drive without feeling any stress of being penalized if they haven’t committed a traffic violation. It is, however, important for motorists to avoid traffic violations, particularly over-speeding as it has been one of the most dangerous traffic violations in Abu Dhabi during the last few years. It is also a major reason why penalties for this dangerous violation were increased tremendously in the recently amended traffic law. The highest penalty that motorists can face for speeding 80 Km/h above the speed limit of a road includes a traffic fine of AED 3,000, 23 black points and confiscation of the vehicles for 60 days.
