Tyre maintenance is critical to ensure a safe driving experience and it should never be ignored by motorists. With tyre blowout incidents increasing by the day in the capital city, Abu Dhabi Police has issued a warning of hefty penalties against motorists for driving a vehicle with unfit tyres.

Tyre maintenance becomes more important in summer season as tyres of a vehicle need to withstand increased levels of heat absorbed by roads. From regular maintenance to a detailed checkup after every few months, motorists should spare no effort to maintain their car tyres in the best condition. Authorities in Abu Dhabi have adopted a tougher stance against motorists who violate tyre safety requirements and increased the scrutiny of offenders with enhanced monitoring of roads.

These initiatives have been taken to urge motorists to maintain their vehicles, especially tyres, on a regular basis.

The tyre blowout incidents occur because of driving a vehicle with unfit tyres and authorities recorded 17 such road accidents during 2017 in which 4 people were killed and 20 were seriously injured. Authorities have also revealed that as many as 28,277 motorists were penalized for driving a vehicle with unfit tyres last year. According to Abu Dhabi Police, a vehicle with weak tyres is a serious threat to the safety of all commuters in heavy traffic as such a vehicle is vulnerable to a tyre blowout scenario, which can cause a dangerous road accident involving multiple vehicles. Such incidents can have fatal consequences and have the potential to result in serious injuries and road deaths. Authorities have identified a few major reasons that can lead to a tyre blowout situation on Abu Dhabi roads and cause dangerous road situations.

Following could be the reasons that can lead to a tyre blowout situation in Abu Dhabi:

  • Carrying more weight in a vehicle than its capacity

  • Excessive wear and tear of tyre tread
  • Not using tyre rims of appropriate shape and size

Important Tyre Maintenance Tips

The life of car tyres can be extended and dangerous road accidents caused by a sudden tyre blowout can be avoided by maintaining car tyres according to the instructions mentioned in the car owner’s manual.
Here are some of the important tyre safety protocols that motorists in Abu Dhabi should always comply with.

  • Keep your tyres well-inflated at all times to prevent them from premature wear and tear. Even if one of your car’s tyres are not inflated properly, it can cause the car to spin out of control if the driver applies emergency brakes.
  • Rotating the car tyres after every 8,000-10,000 kilometers is also very important as it balances the wear and tear experienced by all tyres. You can either apply cross rotation or straight rotation to save your car tyres from experiencing uneven wear and tear.
  • Keep an eye on tyre tread depth as it is one of the important tyre maintenance protocols. A tyre tread depth should not decrease below 1.5-1.6mm as a tyre become more vulnerable to a sudden blowout when the tread depth decreases significantly. Tyre tread depth can be easily measured with the help of a Tyre Tread Depth Gauge.
