Abu Dhabi Police has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against unlicensed drivers and warned motorists against driving without a license. According to Abu Dhabi Police, motorists will be detained and will have to face a hefty fine if they are caught by traffic authorities for driving without a license. Authorities have decided that they will not show any leniency in implementing the traffic penalties against offenders as driving without a license poses a serious threat to the safety of commuters. A warning has also been issued by authorities against parents who allow their underage children to drive their vehicles.

Unlicensed drivers are not professionally trained and their inexperience and lack of familiarity with traffic rules can result in dangerous road accidents. There is a comprehensive Driving License Acquisition Programme in the UAE that provides the driving license aspirants with the required training and improves their defensive driving skills. This Driving License Acquisition Programme is essential for developing an understanding about the traffic culture of the UAE, which is of critical importance particularly for the expatriates and young drivers.

Details of the Warning Issued by the Abu Dhabi Police

The warning comes in the wake of a fatal road accident recently recorded in Al Falah area of Abu Dhabi. The horrific accident resulted in the death of four people including a nanny and three children while the mother of the children who was driving the vehicle sustained serious injuries. According to the Abu Dhabi Police, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed it into a lamp post. The driver didn’t have a license and was driving recklessly, which resulted in a fatal accident.

Many other such incidents have also been reported in recent times, which has deteriorated the road safety situation tremendously. Authorities have now adopted a zero-tolerance policy and decided to penalize the offenders heavily to discourage them from repeating the offence in future.

Lt-Col Abdullah Al Suwaidi, deputy director of the Department of External Zones at Abu Dhabi Police Department of Traffic and Patrols said that driving a car without a license is dangerous and poses a serious threat to both the driver and other road users. He urged all motorists to abide by traffic rules and avoid reckless driving to help authorities maintain road safety situation in the emirate.

Traffic Stats About Road Accidents Caused by Unlicensed Drivers

In 2018, 342 minors were arrested by Abu Dhabi Police as underage drivers were found to be involved in 17 dangerous road accidents. Abu Dhabi Police has also revealed that 866 people were caught for driving without a license in 2017. Abu Dhabi Police has issued a strict warning against parents who don’t keep an eye on their underage children or allow them to drive their vehicles. Underage motorists can pose a serious threat to the safety of other commuters as they can commit dangerous driving mistakes.

Underage motorists and unlicensed drivers don’t have the required skills to maneuver a vehicle safely in challenging road situations, which increases the risk of a fatal road accident. This is the reason why authorities have now taken a tougher stance against offenders to improve road safety situation in the emirate during 2019.
