Motorists to face Fines for manipulating Car Number Plates in the UAE

Driving a car with Dirty Number Plate/Plates is a serious offence in the UAE and must be avoided. Motorists may face fines up to Dh20,000 for driving cars with dirty or unclear number plates. The manipulation of car number plates has increased to an alarming level in the UAE in recent times. A total of 200 drivers in Ras Al Khaimah, alone, have been jailed for this particular offence this year.

Official Statement on Driving Cars with Dirty Number Plates

Motorists must not commit the violation of tampering their car number plates as they will be held accountable for it. According to Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, the responsibility of maintaining the number plates is entirely the responsibility of the drivers and the number plates should always be clean, visible and fixed. The 200 drivers nabbed for manipulating number plates were involved in hiding, tampering, changing, fading or styling their car number plates. All such actions are going to be dealt with strictly, not only in RAK but also in other states of the UAE.

Why Motorists Manipulate their Number Plates

Motorists manipulate their number plates to avoid the penalties for serious violations like over-speeding, jumping red signals and poor overtaking among others. The manipulation of number plates is a serious crime as it can be used to dodge the authorities in case of a Police hunt or for other criminal activities. Motorist should be aware of the dreadful consequences of this offence and should not use this crime to avoid other traffic violations.

Why Number Plates should always be Fixed and Clean

Tampering the number plate is illegal in the UAE and this should be the biggest reason for not doing it. According to the 49th Article of the Federal Traffic Law 21 and the amendment attached to it, the drivers manipulating the number plates will be punished with a heavy fine of Dh20,000 and will also suffer from imprisonment. Not only that, the penalty can also be increased in the case of repetitive violations. This is why car drivers should always keep their number plates clean and fixed.
