August 10 was a major date in the diary for Toyota 86 enthusiasts as the cult car’s chief engineer Tetsuya Tada attended an event held in his honor at Toyota Australia’s Sydney office. Fans traveled from all over Australia to meet the brains behind Toyota’s most recent sports car.
The event was promoted on social media by Australian 86 clubs, forums and blogs and was fully subscribed in little over a week. On the day, enthusiasts arrived in 272 cars including 234 examples of the Toyota 86 sports car, which Tada said was a record gathering outside Japan for the one-year-old nameplate.
Delighted to be joining Australian fans of the 86, Mr Tada told an enthusiastic crowd, “I made this car for you and people like you around the world. You have made this car a great success with more than 6,000 sold in Australia the third highest total in the world.“
Mr Tada spent much of the event signing his autograph on just about every one of the 86’s components, from dash panels to engine covers as well as model cars, t-shirts, owner’s manuals and posters.
