Federal committee to determine the value of the ‘Deposit’ for cars

The Ministry of Economy in cooperation with the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology “Mwasfat” and the Department of Economic Development in Dubai formed a joint federal committee to study and determine the value of the upfront deposit of money for buying cars in the cars’ markets in the state.

Dr.Hashim Al Nuaimiwho is the director of the Consumer Protection Department in the Ministry of Economy said in a statement that the committee will submit its recommendations to the Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection regarding the government’s actions that will be taken in order to enhance the stability of the automotives’ market in the state through supporting the consumers to get their rights. He said that the committee is currently working on a comprehensive study that focuses on aresearch to know the justifications for paying a “deposit”when buying a car. Also, the committee studies the “deposit” value and duration, taking into accounts the opinion of the cars’ dealerships in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in addition to thebest international practices adopted in this respect.

He stated that the ministry has held a meeting with the Committee of cars’ dealerships in the state to discuss a mechanism of recovering the “deposit” and the sufficientduration to recover it in addition to the justifications and international practices in this aspect, as well as to discuss the agreement of the neutral side which will examine the carsif they have any manufacturing defects. The manager of the Consumer Protection Department mentioned that the committee has agreed so far that Abu Dhabi Police takes charge of checking cars in Abu Dhabi while the Roads and Transport Authority checks the cars in Dubai and the Transport Foundation of Sharjahwill examine the cars in Sharjahin addition to the neutral certified experts.

Also, he said: “the committee decided to form another neutral federal committee to take care of the technical examinationissuesfor cars after it discovered manymanufacturing defects in a lot of global automotive brandsduring the last period which led to several maintenance and recovery operations”. He pointed out that the ministry addressed all the cars’ dealerships in order to apply the terms of the uniform contract and fixing any defect in the full compliance with the contract where the ministry specified a deadline for all the cars’ dealerships to apply the terms of the unified contract.
