In any lucrative business, the aspect of selling fake and substandard products can’t be ruled out. There is a big number of car manufacturing companies all selling cars of different sizes and design which gives a window of opportunity to opportunists who don’t care about quality of products they sell to people but are after the quick money. Fake and sub-standard car auto parts have uncontrollably spread out worldwide which has led to the Dubai’s Department of Economic Development (DED) to sign an agreement with Daimler AG, manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, to fight against counterfeit auto parts of the cars.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the DED and Daimler will work together to eliminate use and trade of counterfeit auto parts and also to educate consumers on intellectual property rights (IPR). This will help in decrease of fake auto parts on the market and in return reduce the spread of them in Dubai. These fake products can cause accidents claiming people’s lives for example if a used car has all its tyres replaced with fake tyres that can easily puncture at high speed since they are not tested and certified by the original carmakers to handle such conditions of high temperature.

The DED will provide Daimler AG with receipts of counterfeit Mercedes-Benz auto parts confiscated in the emirate so that their origins can be traced. This agreement with the carmakers will draw more people to buy Mercedes-Benz cars since all its auto parts will be approved by the company itself before being sold to people. This is an eye-opener to all other car manufacturers to make borrow a leaf from Daimler AG’s book to maintain and monitor the quality of their auto parts throughout the world.
