You think that driving in New York or on the freeways around San Francisco are bad? You haven’t seen anything until you’ve tried to drive through a major city like Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
Overall, there are some important things to keep in mind:
(1) Remember the three-second rule? Add three more seconds, just in case. Always watch in your rearview mirrors if you can, trying to avoid getting rear-ended, especially if you are at a stop. It’s a good philosophy to think “even though I’m not at fault, I don’t want to go through this today.” If you have stayed far enough behind the car in front of you, you have plenty of room to move forward if needed.
(2) Keep an eye out for the daredevils who might all of a sudden pop their car up on two wheels. (3) Watch out for the out-of-place NASCAR drivers! There are many extremely fast sports cars in the UAE and if the cops can’t catch them anyway, why follow the speed limit rules?
(4) Keep an eye out for camel crossing. Not only are the animals lovable (only from a distance!), but they are extremely large and would cause a HUGE amount of damage to your vehicle.
(5) Overall, make sure you know your route and are comfortable with the roads you have selected. If not, there’s always another way.
Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited, and Dubai Police take a zero tolerance approach – in other words, it is not safe to have even one drink if you are driving.
So let’s say you’ve decided you don’t want to take the chance of driving around, you don’t drive well in traffic. If you take the metro or a bus, you’ll be fine – just be polite and friendly. If you decide to hail a taxi, keep these three things in mind: Always be friendly and chatty, don’t give your driver the idea that you don’t know where you are going, and never, ever tell the driver you are in a hurry. Not following these guidelines will land you albeit where you wanted to go, but with an angry driver who has gone all over Dubai to get a distance of five blocks and the second you get out of the vehicle you might get sick. All the more reason to be nice, keep the conversation light and give a good tip!
