The driver of a school bus was killed and seven passengers injured yesterday when the vehicle crashed into a lamp post.

Six female Emirati college students and the bus supervisor, from the Comoros Islands, were hurt in the smash and taken to Al Dhaid Hospital.

The Pakistani driver crashed at about 4pm on Madam Road in Al Thamed area as the group were returning home from classes.

The girls, all between the ages of 15 and 17, are engineering students at Ajman College.

One of them was in intensive care last night but in a stable condition, said a hospital spokeswoman.

The parents of another student asked that she be transferred to a hospital in Dubai.

“The students sustained multiple fractures and one had a dislocation of her hip,” the spokeswoman said.

“The girls suffered both moderate and minor injuries and doctors are continuing to conduct tests, including CT scans, to ensure they were not exposed to internal bleeding,” the spokeswoman said.

The bus supervisor suffered moderate injuries.

The accident was the first involving a school bus since the start of the new academic year this week.

Police have appealed to bus drivers to follow all safety procedures and traffic rules.
