It is stipulated by the traffic law in the United Arab Emirates that you should inspect and register your car before using it on roads, in accordance with the approved technical standards and specifications.

Steps of registration:

  1. Creating a traffic file, in accordance with terms and conditions of RTA.

–          Creating traffic file for individuals:

* UAE & GCC Citizens, in addition to UAE residents can apply for opening traffic files at RTA in accordance with the terms and conditions approved by Roads and Transport Authority.

* If your driving license is issued from the Emirate of Dubai, then you don’t have to apply for opening a traffic file on account of having a recorded traffic file automatically.

–          Creating traffic file for companies:

* Dubai licensed companies can apply for opening traffic files to register their vehicles, in accordance with the terms & conditions approved by Roads and Transport Authority.

  1. Conditions For Registering Vehicles

The following are general requirements for vehicle registration and licensing process, that are set by the Licensing Agency of Roads and Transport Authority:
1. Creating a traffic file under the name of the person or entity.
2. Vehicle registration is available for UAE citizens, GCC citizens and residents, if they meet all requirements for opening a traffic file. For registering company vehicles, company trade license must be issued from the Emirate of Dubai.
3. Passing the vehicles technical inspection which includes light vehicle inspections from other Emirates.
4. Vehicle Insurance
5. Approving color and engine changes or any additions to the vehicle by the technical inspection department at the service centers.

  1. Technical Inspection Standards

The international standards and specifications of vehicle technical inspections on various vehicle types are applied by the Roads and Transport Authority. Compliance to these standards is considered a prerequisite for passing the vehicle technical inspection and it ensures the maximum security and safety levels for road users. Each type of vehicles has standards, including light vehicles, heavy vehicles, and trailers.

  1. Your vehicle insurance

Vehicle insurance is required to complete the vehicle licensing process. Consider insuring with an RTA trusted insurer in accordance with the terms and conditions applicable to these companies, which vary based on the type of vehicle and date of manufacture.
To make transacting with the Licensing Agency fast and easy, all insurance companies are linked to the Agency and send their vehicle insurance information to the Agency Online, and this means that it is not required from clients to provide insurance documents when registering or renewing their vehicle registration.

The following are two types of registered insurance agents:

RTA Trusted insurance agents: These companies provide integrated services pertaining to vehicle licensing and registration (such as vehicle registration renewal) as an agent of the RTA, in addition to providing vehicle insurance services.
RTA approved insurance agents: insurance companies are electronically linked to RTA, and they responsible for sending insurance documents and processing transactions electronically.
