Take your Car for a Checkup

Just like you will go to a doctor for a precautionary checkup, you need to take your car to a mechanic and have him take a thorough look at the car before heading on to a long road trip. You must also instruct the mechanic to take a peek at the exhaust system, lights, brakes, tires, oil, defroster and heater of the car. This is just a precaution, just in case.

Test Your Battery

You must get your battery tested. This is an important step, especially if your battery is more than three years old. Mechanics and auto repair shops do this procedure for free, so if you don’t own a battery tester, don’t be worried. Your mechanic can do it for free. If you find any corrosions, clean them as well. You must get your battery changed if that’s the only solution left.

Check Hoses, Belts and Engine Oil

When your mechanic is taking a look under the hood of the car, ask him to check the hoses and belts for any deterioration. If they look worn, it is best if you have them replaced. Change your vehicle’s oil. If you are going on a winter road trip to a very cold area, it is best to change the oil with one that is suitable for the current temperature. Since oil thickens in cold temperatures, this is better in regards to the performance of the vehicle on a road trip.

Check the Radiator

You need to check your radiator, especially the antifreeze level in it. Checking it is very easy. Your mechanic will already have a tool for it with him, but you can easily get one from your local auto parts stores. The level of antifreeze can be brought back up by mixing half antifreeze with half water and adding it to your radiator. This will bring the levels back up and make sure your radiator will not freeze, even in the extreme weather conditions.

Check Your Windshield Wipers

In case of rain, you will depend a lot on your windshield wipers to make sure that you can see the road ahead easily. Check your windshield wipers and if they are worn out, it is better to change them. Since the worn out wipers will not be able to work properly, it is best to get rid of them before you go on your winter road trip.

Some Other Basic Tips for a Long Road Trip in Winters

  • Make sure that the gas tank of your car always stays at least half full, this will prevent the gas lines of your car from freezing on the road trip.
  • Refill the windshield washer fluid and make sure you keep an extra container of it with you, just in case of a dire need.
  • Check your tyres. Tyre pressure decreases in cold, they can deflate and this can be dangerous, especially if it rains. Check the tyre pressure and replace them if they are worn out. Keep at least two spare tyres with you as well.
  • Keep a first aid kit, road flares, small tool kit, fire extinguisher, tow rope, matches and candles, flashlight with extra batteries, warm clothes, blankets, food and water with you, in case you cannot stop and get these necessities.
  • Make sure you plan your route before you start the road trip and make sure you memorize it or you have it preloaded on your smart devices so you don’t get lost and ruin all the fun.
  • Always check the weather before you start your road trip and make sure you are ready for Mother Nature.

Preparing your Vehicle for a long Road Trip Makes your Journey Safe

Once you are done with all these car maintenance measures and essential preparations, you will not have to take any precautions while you are on the road trip. These things become necessary, especially when you go on a winter road trip with your family. Don’t forget to drive safe and enjoy your time with your family.
