We have witnessed some of the most astonishing world records being broken in recent times by the giants of automotive industry as the rivalry between car brands has intensified more than ever before. Last year, Toyota stunned the automotive world with the longest sustained car drift to break the world record, which was previously held by BMW. However, BMW reclaimed the record just recently as it left car enthusiasts shell-shocked with a breathtaking 8-hour long continual drift.
BMW is now the proud new record holder of the world’s longest sustainable car drift. What BMW could achieve on the day was truly unbelievable as M5, a performance sedan, managed to continue a 232.5 miles long drift to shatter the previous world record held by Toyota 86 for a 102-mile long drift in 8 hours. BMW M5 broke the world record comprehensively and has now set an astounding new drift record that seems hard to break anytime soon.
Details of the Record-breaking Longest Drift
The stage was set for the longest ever sustained drift around a skid pad at the BMW Performance Centre in Greer, South Carolina. The initial settings for the record-breaking drift had to involve a system, which could be used to refuel the M5 as breaking the world record for the longest drift without refuelling was virtually not possible. According to rules and regulations of Guinness for this record, the driver is allowed to stop the vehicle for refuelling, however, BMW had other plans to take the thrill and fun of this exceptional world record breaking event to a whole new level and showcase its dominance in the automotive industry.
Inspired by the in-flight aircrafts refuelling mechanism, BMW decided to make this world record an absolutely intriguing affair with the use of mid-run car-to-car refuelling system. The BMW M5 performance sedan was equipped with a complete refuelling system that allowed it to be refuelled on the run, which was simply heart-stopping. The refuelling system involved a Custom Dry Brake Fuel System, an F10 M5, a high pressure hose and an extra fuel cell. The mention of the daredevil stuntman Matt Butts cannot be missed here who refuelled the BMW M5 while it was on its way to smashing the record for the longest sustained drift.

The refuelling system was used 5 times during the record-breaking stunt and though not all the refilling efforts were smooth, maintaining one’s composure and daring to fill the fuel tank on the move was simply bewildering. The longest ever drift continued for 8 hours without even a single stop as the refuelling system worked as per expectation.

Drivers who made it Possible!
BMW invited the Danish racing driver, Johan Schwartz, who is world famous for spending his days pushing cars to their absolute limits. BMW knew that Schwartz was the right man for this challenge as he has already set many world records including the BMW’s earlier record-breaking drift with BMW M5 in 2013. Schwartz continued drifting the BMW M5 for 8 hours around a skid pad at BMW performance Centre to set the world record for the longest ever drift.
The refuelling car, which was a 2017 BMW M5, was driven by American Precision Driver, Matt Mullins, who successfully refueled the other BMW five times during the record breaking stunt. While setting the record for the longest ever sustained drift, BMW could also manage to break the record for longest ever twin-drift. To break this record, the two BMWs had to drift together while leaving the distance of a vehicle between them and had to travel more than 17.72 miles. Johan Schwartz and Matt Mullins decided to up the ante in style as they broke this record in a comprehensive manner by managing a twin drift for 49.25 miles.
