The M635CSi and M1

John Phillips III, the American Automobile Magazine’s presentation of the M6 in 1987:

“Even if you do not want a BMW deserves to go to a dealership and take a look at this motor in the flesh (aluminum and steel?).

Phillips also liked the noise: “Actually, speaking of noise, the M6 does not emit anything but music. A symphony of sounds emanating from the six individual butterflies of six online is as chilling as anything this side of a Bosworth DFV. Ferraris included. ”

The M5 1984 (E28)

The last car to carry this old but charismatic motor racing in the street was the car my friend bought the E34 M5. To be mounted on the modern car designed to last until mid-1990, the engine of the 1970s was largely reworked. The bore was increased to 86 mm, totaling 3,535 cc (actually then a 3.5-liter and not 3.6 as BMW says). The compression ratio was increased to 10:1, new camshafts, and a completely new intake system of variable length (but still with six butterflies) was created. New valve springs and a new crankshaft have raised the maximum speed for 7.250rpm. The result was nothing less than 310 hp at 6,900 rpm.

In 1990, Kevin Smith, Car and Driver said about the engine of the M5:

“And the engine is even better than the specifications suggest. It is smooth, fast replies, and is incredibly strong. Responds calmly below 3,000 rpm to 3,500 rpm are fully awake, and anything above 4,000 is a real storm. All controls and gears and valves are in harmony with the exhaust growl and scream admission, with extremely exciting result. The thingy has to idle a nerve muscle car! ”

The numbers that the magazine was able to drive are impressive even 20 years later: 0-100 in 5.5 seconds and the quarter mile in 14 seconds, 160 km / h. And the magazine, usually very critical, also made an unusual praise, worthy of repeating: “And the brute force may not be the greatest quality of the M5. Your best quality can be only just that: to be the best. According to some perfectly logical and reasonable criteria, the new generation of the BMW M5 may well be the best car in the world. ”

The dashboard of a 1995 M5 (E34)

The E34 M5 then has , besides the impeccable pedigree and legendary engine, everything else would go on the shopping list Enthusiast : three pedals and a stick shift , distribution of well – designed weight , low center of gravity , aerodynamic designed for speeds above 200 , 4-wheel independent suspension ( McPherson front arm and dragged behind this case) , four huge disc brakes with ABS are able to repeatedly stop the mastodon ( 1.745kg , Barabbas ! ) from un-publishable speeds and four aluminum wheels with low profile tires ( 235/45 ZR17 ) .

Wheels that pull air to the brakes

Parentheses on wheels: Originally, the M5 came with these very unique and different wheels: over the turbine wheel to a genuine two-piece that pulled air for ventilation of the brake discs. Genial and functional, ended up being a failure simply because it was ugly for ass, making the car look equipped with white belt tires. Almost all were replaced by hubcap “star” of the latest versions of the car, which fits perfectly in place of calotona / aluminum turbine.

The E34 M5 still had more of an evolution, the 3.8 liter version. Increasing the bore and stroke to 94.6 x 90 mm , and the rate again to 10, 5:1, among other things , it reached 340 hp this is the latest evolution of a legendary and immortal engine.

M5 was also the last six cylinders. The next version already had a V – 8 ultra-modern. Objectively, continued always improving. But particularly carry a much greater affection for cars equipped with one six online competition 1970s by accident of fate ended up having a long life on the streets.
