Eid Al Adha will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 and the public sector will enjoy a five-day long weekend, which will provide people with a great opportunity to plan recreational trips.

Traffic authorities across the UAE have issued a warning against motorists and reminded them of strict penalties for using a mobile phone while driving.

Official Statement on the Use of Mobile Phone While Driving

Using a mobile phone while driving is a serious road safety concern as it can result in a dangerous road accident on a busy road. Even a few seconds of distraction in heavy traffic can cause a dangerous road accident involving multiple vehicles and this is the reason why authorities have asked motorists to be more careful during Eid holidays.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the Traffic Department at Dubai Police, warned motorists against using mobile phone while driving. He categorically warned motorists against exchanging Eid greetings through social media and text messages and also advised motorists not to take pictures while driving. He said that people often forget to follow traffic rules in their celebratory mood, which threatens the road safety situation considerably.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui urged motorists to show respect for traffic rules and follow speed limits. Apart from the use of mobile phone while driving, authorities have also warned people against jaywalking, over-speeding and jumping the red signal. Authorities have completed their arrangements to make this Eid Al Adha safe for commuters with emphasis on controlling run-over accidents, which can occur more frequently during public holidays. The Police patrols will cover areas alongside shopping malls and tourist destinations as huge crowds are expected to flock to these places during Eid holidays.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-In-Chief of Dubai Police wished residents of the UAE a happy and pleasant holiday on Eid Al Adha. He advised motorists to drive carefully and urged parents not to allow their underage children to drive their vehicles during holidays.

Penalties for the Use of Mobile Phone While Driving

Motorists can commit multiple driving mistakes at the same time when they use their mobile phone while driving. The divided attention can result in jumping the red signal, driving on the hard shoulder, violating speed limits, tailgating and changing lanes in a dangerous manner. The risk of a fatal run-over accident also increases significantly when motorists drive without 100% attention on the road.

The penalties for dangerous traffic violations were revised last year when the new traffic law was implemented in the UAE. Authorities toughened their stance against traffic offenders and increased the penalties for the most frequently committed traffic violations. Using a mobile phone while driving is one of the most dangerous traffic violations that has caused many fatal accidents on the UAE roads during the last few years. For committing this violation, motorists will face a hefty fine of AED 800 and four black points will be issued against their driving license.

Motorists should also be aware that they can face traffic penalties for multiple violations at the same time when they use a mobile phone while driving. Some of the serious penalties such as over-speeding can even levy a hefty fine of AED 3,000 and cause suspension of the driving license of the offenders.

The table given below provides details of the speeding penalties according to the new traffic law:
