The State News Agency (WAM) has reported saying that, implementing the plans on the roads, has launched on the addition of the fifth lane in both directions to the E10 road from Abu Dhabi to Al Shahama.

The agency added announcing that the 16 kilometer expansion is scheduled to be completed and done by the end of 2014, divided into two, a nine kilometers motorway from Sas Al Nakhl to the end of the Abu Dhabi International Airport Interchange, and seven kilometers motorway from Yas Island Interchange to Al Shahama.

In framework of this plan, the workers are going to make the central reservation of the road narrow by about 5.3 meters each way, then landscape the rest after the expansion is finished.

According to what they are running through, the Capital’s Department of Transport (DoT) studies show that additional lanes are needed to be constructed in the running with an expected increase in traffic.

This main route connects between three developing areas – Abu Dhabi Island, Abu Dhabi International Airport and Al Shahama.

It is worthy to mention that, this project of the fifth lane is a part of the Abu Dhabi Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP), which aims to improve infrastructure such as motorways and create additional means of public transport.

Higher capacity and faster flow of traffic were set as goals for Abu Dhabi’s motorways when the Department of Transport (DoT) announced the plan in the spring of 2009.

It encompassed about 1,000km of new or expanded motorways.

The government agencies took part in the roads project including Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, the Department of Municipal Affairs, Abu Dhabi Police and Abu Dhabi Airports Company.
