In a new video released under the recently launched “Give Your Comment” campaign, Abu Dhabi Police has exposed errant drivers who failed to comply with pedestrian safety rules on Abu Dhabi roads. The new video is the continuation of videos posted by Abu Dhabi Police on its social media accounts as part of the new campaign that aims at increasing awareness about safety risks of dangerous traffic violations committed by motorists.
Pedestrian safety is often ignored by motorists, which is a major road safety concern for authorities. To make motorists more responsible for their actions and to improve the safety of pedestrians on Abu Dhabi roads, traffic authorities have now taken a tougher stance and warned motorists against violating pedestrian safety rules.

Details of the Warning Issued to Motorists
The two-month awareness campaign “Give Your Comment” was launched in October 2018 to discourage motorists from committing dangerous traffic violations. Under this campaign, videos of dangerous traffic violations have been shared on the social media accounts of Abu Dhabi Police to expose errant drivers who threatened the safety of other commuters on Abu Dhabi roads.
In the recently released video, it can be clearly seen that a number of motorists failed to comply with pedestrian safety rules. In most of these incidents, over-speeding motorists failed to give way to pedestrians at designated pedestrian crossings, which resulted in serious accidents.

Penalties for Ignoring Pedestrian Safety at Designated Crossings
According to the recent survey reports, a number of motorists are still not aware of the penalties for dangerous traffic violations. The penalties for traffic violations were changed in the amended traffic law that was implemented last year. Authorities have launched several campaigns before and after the implementation of the amended traffic law to raise awareness about the amendments made to the traffic law. Authorities have also provided information about the penalties of dangerous traffic violations through the “Give Your Comment” campaign.
The traffic penalties for ignoring pedestrian safety at designated crossings include a fine of AED 500 and 6 black points. On the other hand, motorists can also face penalties for driving in a way that endangers the safety of pedestrians. The penalties for this violation include a hefty fine of AED 1,000 and 12 black points. Besides that, motorists can also be detained for causing a dangerous road accident involving pedestrians.

Official Statement on the Warning Issued to Motorists
Traffic authorities have issued a strict warning against motorists for ignoring the safety of pedestrians on Abu Dhabi roads. Major Aisha Mohammed Al Zaabi, Head of Public Relations, Traffic and Patrol Department, Central Operations Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasized the importance of allowing pedestrians the right of way on the designated pedestrian crossing areas. She advised motorists to reduce the speed of their vehicles ahead of the crossing areas so that pedestrians can cross the road in a safe manner.
Major Aisha Mohammed Al Zaabi explained how authorities intend to create awareness amongst people by sharing the videos of traffic violations as part of the “Give Your Comment” campaign. She said that it is part of the awareness building process that aims at improving the driving habits of motorists in order to find a long-term solution to emirate’s traffic problems.
Bottom-line
Apart from being an important traffic rule, it is also a civic responsibility of motorists to allow the right of way to pedestrians at the designated crossing areas. A careful driving behavior of motorists can help avoid dangerous accidents and can save lives of pedestrians. It is also important for pedestrians to follow safety practices and wait for fast-approaching vehicles to pass before crossing the road. This is how pedestrian safety can be ensured and fatal run-over accidents can be avoided on Abu Dhabi roads.
