New VW Beetle Dune Concept

The Volkswagen Beetle has been around for over fifty years, but this year VW is introducing a new off-road version: The Beetle Dune Concept. Scheduled to be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show, the car company has released some information about this car – and she’s a beauty!

Volkswagen introduced a Dune Beetle concept in 2000 in Los Angeles, but the actual production of it was not very realistic. The interior and the roof structure just did not make much sense when making the car a reality. This attempt will be much more likely to enter production.

Based on the R-Line version of the Beetle that is already in production, the stance of this car is much more aggressive and quite a bit wider and lower than the older dune buggies. With its exceptional capability to drive on rough terrain, the only thing that really signifies that it is a Beetle is the style of the body.

The engine will have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a six-speed dual clutch transmission, getting somewhere in the range of 200 horsepower. It has the ability to drive on the sand like a four wheel drive, because of the XDS electronic differential that keeps the most possible traction on the front wheels at all times. All of these new mechanical functions are joined together with the style accustomed to VW beetles. The sleek new LED halo running lights, matched with the chrome accents in the rims and the bumpers are what keeps this car a visually appealing model. While the image above is only the teaser sketch that was released by Volkswagen before the Detroit Auto Show, the car itself is sure to look just as stylish. The big question will be its performance on the road, er, sand. I’m sure that Volkswagen will be interested to see the public response, and if it is well received, will have the car in production as soon as possible.

This particular model, if it does come into production as expected in 2015, would be perfect for residents of the UAE because of the sandy climate. One of the most likely reasons for such high numbers in car accidents is the loss of traction on sandy roads; this car would be a perfect solution to these problems if it did in fact make it to production.
