The cool thing about this car is that it is a plug-in hybrid. Its older brother, the 2014 model S Hybrid was definitely just an introduction to the real deal. The new Panamera adds performance and power to an advanced electric drive system that of course has a major focus on reducing emissions and improving fuel economy.
When this model goes on sale, the major choice for customers will be the Porsche versus Mercedes Benz’ model, the plug-in S-Class. However, customers that are considering the Tesla Model S, another comparative vehicle, might be pulled in the direction of the Porsche as well.
The new Panamera S E-Hybrid is very different mechanically than the previous versions. It has a 9.4-kWh lithium-ion battery as opposed to the old nickel metal hydride batter. This is a huge step in electric vehicle innovation because it gives the engine of the all-electric auto enough power to keep up with the now outdated fully gas-powered engines. Porsche assures that this vehicle can travel a full 20 miles before the engine turns on, when the battery charge drops to 15%. Believe it or not, although with the engine running this hybrid tops out at 167 mph, the all-electric top speed is still 83 mph! With a 240-volt power source, the battery can charge in just two and a half hours, while if you plug it into a 120-volt wall outlet (yes, you can do this) it would probably need a good eight or ten hours of charge. However, in E-Charge mode, the battery can also be recharged while driving – it basically uses the engine as a generator. One of the other three modes is the E-Power mode, the best mode to use when trying to keep the vehicle under full electric power. In one test run, the traveling distance was 32 miles, driving 24 miles on electricity alone and overall averaging about 168 miles per gallon! That kind of fuel economy has absolutely reached a whole new level. When returned to E-Charge mode on the same trip, it took about 30 miles to fully restore the charge of the battery, and the average fuel economy for that leg of the trial run was around 29 mpg. The third mode in the E-Hybrid is Sport mode, for those times when you are stopped at a red light next to a teeny-bopper that needs to be put in his place.
For so long, it seemed that a lot of the electric and hybrid cars have lacked just the right amount of luxury to make them appealing to the upper classes, but Porche this coming year has really hit the nail on the head.
