In a major new development, Dubai Municipality has seized about 2,400 abandoned cars as part of an ongoing clean-up drive in the emirate. According to authorities, many abandoned vehicles in Dubai have been seized to enhance the appearance of the emirate as these vehicles have become an impending source of dust pollution.

This comes as a massive development, which should alert motorists who have abandoned their vehicles for any reason.  Authorities have also warned motorists that the seized vehicles will be sold off at an auction if the owners of these vehicles don’t contact the authorities within six months.

Official Statement on the New Development

Abdulmajeed Saifaie, Director of Waste Management Department at Dubai Municipality has revealed that the new clean-up drive in Dubai aims at raising awareness about the environmental hazards caused by abandoned vehicles. He said abandoned or neglected vehicles deteriorate the beauty of the emirate and cause dust pollution.

Authorities have announced that vehicles neglected for a long time will be seized and shifted to the scrapyard. A sticker will be placed on these vehicles 15 days ahead of their seizure to notify motorists who own these vehicles. After six months of being moved to the scrapyard, authorities will hold an auction to sell the abandoned vehicles if motorists don’t contact the authorities to get their vehicles released.

Motorists must take this warning seriously to get their vehicles released before they are sold at the auction. Authorities have taken a tougher stance against the careless behavior of motorists and have planned to visit workshops and garages for abandoned cars in different areas including Umm Ramool, Al Qusais, Jebel Ali and Port Saeed.

Notable Environment-Friendly Initiatives in Dubai

Traffic and municipal authorities in Dubai have launched several initiatives to improve the outlook of the emirate and to demonstrate a progressive image of Dubai. For this purpose, many awareness campaigns have been launched to reduce air and dust pollution in the country. Through these campaigns, authorities have urged motorists to use public transport in place of their private vehicles. Authorities have also emphasized on the importance of switching from combustion engine vehicles to Hybrids and Electric Vehicles (EVs) to reduce the carbon footprint of the emirate. These efforts and the recent development of seizing abandoned vehicles have been aimed at improving the air quality of Dubai.

Authorities have also offered motorists several incentives and benefits for using sustainable commuting options. The transport system in Dubai is one of the most advanced systems in the world that ensures safety, convenience and reliability for commuters. On the other hand, purchasing an eco-friendly vehicle such an EV will not only enable motorists to contribute towards improving the air quality of Dubai, but will also help them in reducing their fuel expense.

EVs don’t need conventional fuel, hence motorists on a tight budget can get long-term relief from their worries regarding fluctuating fuel prices in the UAE by switching from their combustion engine vehicles to EVs. The UAE government has launched an incentive programme for EV owners and buyers to promote the sales of electric vehicles in the UAE.

Bottom-line

Authorities have seized a large number of abandoned vehicles in Dubai, which should alert motorists who have abandoned their vehicles in the emirate for any reason. Authorities have also announced that the seized vehicles will be auctioned if they remain unattended by their owners. This effort is part of the Dubai clean-up drive that has been launched in the emirate to improve the appearance of the city. Under the clean-up drive in Dubai, the Dubai Municipality and other authorities aim at improving the air quality by reducing air and dust pollution.
