The Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Police has released the traffic report of two years (2017-2018) to highlight the major traffic problems of the emirate. The report released by authorities clearly shows that speeding motorists caused the most number of fatal road accidents while a large number of accidents were recorded on highways. The overall road safety situation slightly improved in 2018 as compared to 2017, particularly after the implementation of the new traffic law.
The new traffic law was implemented in the UAE on July 1, 2017, in an effort to improve the road safety situation. A number of new traffic rules were introduced while the penalties for dangerous traffic violations were revised in the new traffic law. These changes were made to discourage motorists from committing dangerous violations as 2016 was a bad year for the road safety situation in the UAE.
The traffic report of 2017 and 2018 shows a gradual improvement in the state of road safety, however, the reckless driving behavior of motorist still remained a major concern for traffic authorities.
Details of the New Traffic Report Released by RAK Police
As many as 91 motorists lost their lives in fatal road accidents recorded in Ras Al Khaimah during the last two years. However, in 2018, a marginal decrease was observed in road deaths as compared to 2017. The RAK Police has released details about the major reasons behind fatal road accidents recorded during this period.
Given below are the major findings of the new report:
- 46 Road deaths were recorded in 2017 while 45 motorists were killed in road accidents during 2018.
- 9 Fatal road accidents were recorded on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road in 2017.
- Women drivers were involved in 6 fatal road accidents in 2017, however, only two fatal accidents involved women drivers in 2018.
- Emirati motorists were involved in 13 road accidents in which 13 motorists lost their lives during 2017. In 2018, 18 such accidents were recorded in which 16 people were killed.
- 2 Fatal accidents were recorded in inclement weather during 2017 as compared to none in 2018.
- 15 Road accidents were recorded on highways in 2017 as compared to 11 such accidents recorded in 2018.
- 19 people sustained minor injuries in 2017 while 23 people sustained such injuries in 2018.
- As many as 36 fatal road accidents were caused by speeding motorists during the last two years in Ras Al Khaimah. It was the most number of accidents caused by any traffic violation.
Speeding stood out as the major reason behind most of the fatal road accidents recorded during the last two years. This is a worrying sign for traffic authorities who have left no stone unturned in eliminating the risk of speeding-related accidents. The efforts made by authorities have helped improve the overall road safety situation, yet a lot still needs to be done to curb the menace of over-speeding.
Traffic Penalties for Speeding Violations in the UAE
The traffic report of the last two years has clearly revealed that speeding is still a major reason behind fatal road accidents in Ras Al Khaimah. In view of a significant increase observed in the speeding-related accident, the speeding penalties were increased tremendously in the new traffic law. Speeding offenders can now face a whopping fine of AED 3,000 for an over-speeding violation besides other serious penalties.

Col Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi, Acting-Director General of the Central Operations Room, RAK Police said that the traffic authorities have taken a number of initiatives to improve the road safety situation during the last few years. These initiatives include the implementation of stricter policies, installation of advanced traffic monitoring systems on RAK roads and increased surveillance on accident-prone roads.
Col Ahmad Al Sam Al Naqbi added that the traffic figures of last two years show satisfactory improvement in the road safety situation, however, authorities will take the necessary measures to ensure that the road situation continues to improve in the future.
