The RAK Police has identified careless driving as a major reason behind dangerous road accidents recorded in the emirate during 2018. - 1,029 Motorists were issued hefty fines for driving in a careless manner.
- 136 Road accidents were caused by careless drivers in 2018.
- The number of male drivers using their mobile phone while driving exceeded the number of female drivers using the mobile phone while driving.
- Most of the careless drivers were identified to be 20 to 25 years old.
- 62 Road accidents were caused by swerving drivers.
- 42 Road accidents were caused by drivers who failed to follow lane discipline.
- 30 Accidents were caused by motorists who failed to leave a safe distance between their vehicle and the vehicle ahead.

Traffic authorities have taken several initiatives in the recent past to improve road safety situation in Ras Al Khaimah. One of the major developments that helped improve the road safety situation across the country was the implementation of the new traffic law. The new traffic law was implemented in the UAE on July 1, 2017 in an effort to improve road safety situation. Some major changes were made to the traffic law to increase the scrutiny of traffic offenders and to find a long-term solution for traffic problems of the UAE.
The traffic fines for some major traffic violations were increased in the new traffic law while some new traffic violations were also introduced. Col Ahmed Al Sam Al Naqbi, Director Of The Traffic And Patrols Department, RAK Police said that careless or distracted driving is one of the major reasons behind dangerous road accidents and motorists will have to face serious penalties for committing this violation.
Penalties for Careless driving
Motorists will have to face a fine of AED 400 while 4 black points will be issued against their driving license for driving in a careless manner. Any distracted driving behavior such as using mobile phone, eating or drinking or talking to other passengers while driving can be penalized under this violation.
Col Ahmed Al Sam Al Naqbi added that motorists can also face heftier penalties if their careless driving poses a risk to the lives of other motorists or pedestrians. He said that motorists who pose a risk to the lives of other commuters will have to pay a fine of AED 1,000 while 12 black points will be issued against their driving license. This traffic offence will also result in impoundment of the vehicle involved in the traffic violation.
