Abu Dhabi Police has issued a strict warning to motorists against exhibiting reckless driving behavior in school zones. The warning came with a new video that was posted on the social media accounts of the Abu Dhabi Police as part of their recent campaign, “Give Your Comment.” In the new video, Abu Dhabi Police has exposed an errant driver who threatened the lives of many children in a recent incident that occurred near a school zone.
Abu Dhabi Police has reminded motorists of serious penalties for committing dangerous traffic violations in school zones and urged motorists to be more careful to prevent accidents involving children. Authorities have taken a number of initiatives in recent years to improve the safety of children, however, there are still many errant drivers on Abu Dhabi roads who continue to threaten the safety of children in school zones.

Details of the Warning Issued by Authorities
In a new video released under the Give Your Comment campaign, authorities have exposed an errant driver who crossed the road in front of a school bus so dangerously that it could have led to a fatal road accident.
Here is the video of the incident:
In the video, it can be clearly seen that a driver swerved past a school bus to exit the road. The driver violated traffic rules in a dangerous manner and put the safety of children in the school bus at a serious risk. This is clearly the worst form of lane swerving as it allowed virtually no time for the bus driver to react.
Official Statement
Traffic authorities have categorically warned motorists of serious consequences for exhibiting dangerous driving behavior in school zones. There is a zero-tolerance policy for traffic offenders who violate traffic rules and threaten the safety of children. Colonel Mohammed Ali Al Muhairi, Director of Security Media Department in the Command Affairs Sector, said that the new campaign has been launched to build an understanding of safety risks associated with dangerous traffic violations amongst motorists.
By exposing errant drivers and their traffic violations, authorities aim to discourage motorists from committing such violations. Authorities are also asking the common public for their suggestions to help improve the road safety situation under the new campaign.

Penalties for Sudden Swerving in the UAE
It can be seen in the video given above that the driver didn’t care for the safety of children in the school bus and changed lane abruptly without using indicators. Sudden swerving is a serious traffic violation for which motorists can face hefty penalties in the UAE. The penalties for sudden swerving were increased in the newly amended traffic law that was implemented last year.
Penalties for many dangerous violations including sudden swerving, speeding, tailgating and jumping the red signal were increased significantly in the new traffic law to discourage errant drivers from committing these violations. The penalties for sudden swerving include a hefty fine of AED 1,000 and four black points, which will be issued against the offender’s driving license.
Motorists should also be aware of the fact that they can be booked for other violations too when they commit a sudden swerving violation. A swerving driver can be involved in tailgating, over-speeding as well as jumping the red signal, which will mean that the driver can face penalties for all of these violations at the same time.
In a worst-case scenario, the black points of the offender can amount to 24, which will lead to the suspension of the license. Apart from the fear of being slammed with hefty penalties, the dangerous consequences of sudden swerving on a busy road should also discourage motorists from committing this violation. Sudden swerving in heavy traffic can cause a fatal road accident involving multiple vehicles.

Bottom-line
The safety of children in school zones can only improve if motorists bring a much-needed change to their mindset. It is important for motorists to avoid making dangerous driving mistakes, however, if they commit a traffic violation unintentionally, they should be extra careful in future and avoid repeating it. A mutual effort from both motorists and traffic authorities is required to ensure that the risk of road accidents and road deaths involving children can be completely eliminated in Abu Dhabi.
