The reckless driving behavior of motorists continued to escalate traffic problems in Dubai during Eid Al Adha holidays. A large number of emergency calls were received by Dubai Police during the holidays as motorists involved in minor and major accidents called Dubai Police for help. Despite tighter security arrangements and increased patrolling of roads, the number of road accidents increased significantly during this year’s Eid Al Adha holidays as compared to last year. As a result, authorities have warned motorists and reminded them of hefty penalties for committing dangerous violations.

Details of the Traffic Report Released by Authorities

Dubai Police has released the traffic report for road accidents recorded during the Eid Al Adha holidays. The traffic report reveals that 1,661 road accidents were recorded in the cosmopolitan city during holidays and as many as 68,203 emergency calls were received by Dubai Police. These traffic stats clearly indicate an unfortunate increase in road accidents and emergency calls as compared to the same period of 2016 and 2017.

Brief Comparison of Traffic Stats of Last Two Years

In 2016, only 28 road accidents were recorded during eight days of Eid Al Adha holidays while 49,404 emergency calls were received by Dubai Police. On the other hand, the number of road accidents increased to 728 during the three-day Eid Al Adha holiday in 2017. The latest traffic report shows that road accidents almost doubled from 2017 during the week-long Eid Al Adha holiday in 2018.

The road safety situation also deteriorated quite badly during Eid Al Fitr holidays this year. During the three-day holiday from 15 June to 17 June, traffic authorities in the UAE had recorded more than 900 road accidents, which shows how reckless driving behavior of motorists has continued to deteriorate the road safety situation during public holidays in 2018.

Official Statement on the Latest Traffic Stats

Lt Col Mohammad Ibrahim Al Rayaisa, Acting Director of the Command and Control Centre advised motorists to follow traffic rules while giving his statement on the recently released traffic stats by Dubai Police. He warned motorists against unsafe driving practices such as using mobile phone while driving, not being careful when approaching intersections and not valuing the safety of pedestrians. He also revealed the names of traffic violations that caused most of the road accidents during Eid Al Adha holidays and said that the common causes of road accidents were sudden swerving, tailgating, speeding and neglecting the safety of road users.

Mohammad Ibrahim Al Rayaisa also warned motorists against calling the Dubai Police’s emergency number unnecessarily. He said that the emergency number 999 is for contacting Dubai Police only in emergency situations and for other non-emergency situations, motorists should not waste the time and efforts of Dubai Police. He concluded his statement with remarks that Dubai Police is committed to helping out motorists and providing immediate assistance to them in emergency situations.

Bottom-line

Traffic authorities have taken some notable initiatives in the recent past to make Dubai roads safe for all commuters, however, the road safety situation will only improve if motorists refrain from reckless driving behavior and follow traffic rules. The importance of exercising safe driving practices increases even more during public holidays due to influx of heavy traffic. Adopting a safe driving approach and being considerate of others can help avoid dangerous road accidents and other commuting challenges during public holidays.
