Dangerous traffic violations committed by motorists continued to escalate traffic problems in Dubai during the first half of 2018. Reckless driving behavior of motorists has been a major traffic problem for the cosmopolitan city over the last few years and the first half of 2018 was no different. Dubai has a diverse traffic culture, thanks to a dominant expat population that constitutes almost 80% of the total population of the emirate. Dubai Police has released a new report that reveals how reckless driving behavior of motorists continued to increase traffic problems of the emirate during the first six months of 2018. The report has revealed stats about traffic violations committed by motorists and identified speeding to be the most frequently committed traffic violation during this period.

Details of the Traffic Report Revealed by Dubai Police

The new traffic report provides information about the most frequently committed traffic violations during the first half of 2018. As mentioned earlier, over-speeding topped the list of most frequently committed violations and was also a major reason behind dangerous road accidents recorded in Dubai during the first six months of 2018. According to Dubai Police, as many as 260,169 speeding violations were caught by speed cameras during this period. This is an alarming figure for authorities who have taken several anti-speeding initiatives over the last couple of years.

Other traffic violations that deteriorated the smooth flow of traffic on Dubai roads and put road safety of all commuters at a serious risk were sudden swerving, parking violations, obstructing traffic, using mobile phone while driving, jumping the red signal and not wearing seatbelts. According to authorities, 189,922 tickets were issued for poor lane discipline, 79,752 for parking violations and 64,487 incidents of obstructing traffic were recorded during the first six months of 2018.

Using mobile phones while driving was another commonly committed traffic violation during 2018 as authorities issued 21,362 tickets to the offenders. Motorists obstructing traffic were penalized 19,849 times, 17,528 tickets were issued for not fastening the seatbelt and 11,881 drivers were booked for jumping the red signal. Authorities also issued 8,635 and 7,004 tickets for overtaking on the hard shoulder and stopping the vehicle in the middle of the road for no reason respectively.

Official Statement

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director General of Traffic Department at Dubai Police pointed out reckless driving behavior of motorists to be a major reason behind dangerous road accidents in the emirate. He said that despite the launch of several awareness campaigns and repeated warnings issued against speeding offenders, speeding violations have topped the list of most frequently committed traffic violations during the first half of 2018. “Speed Kills” and many other anti-speeding campaigns have been launched by authorities over the last few years to educate motorists about the road safety risks associated with over-speeding violations. The improvement in the driving behavior of motorists is yet to be seen, however, authorities have hinted at an even more determined and aggressive approach to penalize repeat offenders diligently during the second half of 2018.
