Sharjah Police has been at the forefront of initiatives taken to improve the road safety situation during 2018. From the launch of road safety awareness campaigns to more efficient traffic monitoring, Sharjah Police has made great strides in ensuring road safety for all commuters. These efforts have made a clear difference and the road safety situation in Sharjah has significantly improved during 2018 as compared to previous years. However, traffic problems of the emirate are still far from over, mainly because of the reckless driving behavior of motorists. Sharjah Police has released some important traffic stats that clearly indicate how reckless driving behavior of motorists has affected the road safety situation during 2018.

Details of Traffic Stats Revealed by Sharjah Police

Traffic stats have been revealed by Sharjah Police about seatbelt violations and the use of mobile phone while driving. According to authorities, 8,884 seatbelt violations have been recorded in Sharjah since the start of 2018. On the other hand, 4,426 motorists have been penalized for using mobile phone while driving. Both of these traffic violations are amongst the most dangerous traffic violations in Sharjah as the risk of road deaths increases significantly when motorists commit these violations.

Traffic rules were changed in the recently amended traffic law, as a result of which, traffic penalties for dangerous violations were increased. The penalties for seatbelt violations and use of mobile phone while driving were also increased in the amended traffic law in order to discourage motorists from committing these violations.

Official Statement on the New Traffic Stats

Lieutenant Saud Al Shaiba, spokesperson for the Traffic and Patrol Department said it is important for motorists to wear seatbelts because it reduces the risk of road deaths in the event of a dangerous road accident. He urged drivers to ensure that all passengers in a vehicle wear seatbelts and reminded them of strict penalties for violating this traffic rule. He also emphasized the importance of child safety and urged motorists to buckle up their children aged below 10 years and make them sit in the back seat. He discouraged mothers against carrying children in their lap while commuting even if they were wearing seatbelts. He mentioned that the risk of a child passenger being thrown out of a vehicle increases significantly in the event of a dangerous road accident if the child passenger is not safely strapped in the back seat.

On the other hand, Lieutenant Saud Al Shaiba also gave his viewpoint on the use of mobile phone while driving and considered it to be a serious traffic offence that could put multiple lives at a serious risk in heavy traffic. He said that motorists have been repeatedly warned against using their mobile phone while driving, but it has made little difference to their reckless driving behavior as this violation has remained one of the most frequently committed traffic violations in Sharjah during 2018 so far.

Penalties for Seatbelt Violations and Using Mobile Phone while Driving

Authorities have warned motorists against committing dangerous traffic violations by reminding them of the new traffic penalties according to the recently amended traffic law. Motorists will be penalized with a fine of AED 400 while four black points will also be issued against their driving license for seatbelt violations. It is important to note here that the driver of a vehicle will be fined for each passenger who fails to wear a seatbelt.

On the other hand, the penalties for using mobile phone while driving are even stricter. Motorists face a hefty penalty of AED 800 fine and four black points issued against their license for using mobile phone while driving. Sharjah Police has made it clear that any kind of distraction while driving is strictly prohibited and motorists must drive with 100% attention on the road to avoid hefty penalties.
