Why has RTA upgraded the Number Plate Design?

The new number plates are easily readable, which is in line with the plans of RTA to improve the traffic monitoring standards through smart monitoring devices. According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the RTA, the new design of the number plate is easy to read from a distance. This will certainly help in identifying vehicles involved in traffic violations through traffic radars and cameras, which is vital for penalizing the motorists at fault. According to an RTA official, the new design for the number plates has also been introduced to launch new double digit number plates as the RTA is running out of single codes because of a drastic rise in the number of vehicles registered in Dubai during last few years.

RTA has decided to complete the upgrading procedure for old number plates in three years in order to make this important transition smooth and efficient. This gives enough time to motorists as well to plan their number plate upgrade as per preference, however, motorists who own A, B and C codes will have to get their number plates upgraded from July as it has been made mandatory by RTA.
