Tesla Introduces the New Model E, Its Newest Electric Model

The Detroit Auto Show 2015 will have as its highlight Tesla’s third-generation Model E, according to Franz von Holzhausen, automobile designer of Tesla Motors Inc. However, the car will not be available for public purchase until at least 2016. This delay is typical of Tesla – it seems that they like the anticipation! The first electric car, the Model S, emerged in 2011, followed by the second in 2012, although they were not available for purchase until 2013. Even then, they were directed towards a very small market seated in the upper echelons of global society. This new model, the Model E, is expected to cost half as much as the Model S and is said to be more marketable to the masses. The estimated range of this car is 200 miles just from one charge. That means almost 4 hours of driving (at least) without having to recharge. I wonder how much the equivalent electricity charge is in comparison to what gas would be if it were used. While Tesla currently produces expensive electrics for the luxury market, the aim with this model is to introduce an affordable family car. In addition to the new electric model, Tesla is also planning to develop an electric pickup truck over the next five years. It will be modeled after Ford’s F-150, the best selling model of truck by this manufacturer. I’ll be interested to see what features this has – can an electric truck be four-wheel drive? Finally, Tesla is planning to introduce an autopilot system. It’s kind of cool that Tesla will be the one to do this – I would expect nothing less from them. This system will leave only 10% of the driving up to the human inside! This will allow for more multi-tasking, an ability that has been developed quickly over the past few years with the increase in communication technology and the need for things to be done right away to keep up with the global market. Perhaps this will take us into the new era of transportation, imitating what we’ve seen on television all these years.
