Fuel Prices for the Month of September

Fuel prices have been increased for the second consecutive month in the third quarter of 2017. Before this, the fuel prices were decreased for two consecutive months in June and July respectively. The instability in fuel prices make it difficult for motorists to manage their monthly fuel budget, especially when prices are increased for consecutive months. During 2017, fuel prices were highest in March and now in September, the fuel prices will again witness a noticeable increase. September will actually be the second most expensive month for commuting this year.

Listed below are the new fuel prices by fuel-type in the UAE, which will be effective from September 1, 2017:

  • The new price for Special 95 will be AED 1.90/Litre. In August, Special 95 was sold at AED 1.78/Litre.
  • The Super 98 will also witness an increase in its price. The August price of Super 98 was AED 1.89/Litre, which will be increased to AED 2.01/Litre in September.
  • The price of E Plus-91 will be increased from AED 1.71/Litre in August to AED 1.83/Litre in September.
  • The diesel price has also been raised. The new price for diesel will be AED 2.00/Litre, its price in August was 1.88/Litre.

A strategy for liberalization of fuel prices was introduced at the start of 2017 to streamline the change in fuel prices every month. According to this new strategy, the prices for all types of fuel will be subject to an equal increase on monthly basis. This new liberalizing strategy of fuel prices mounts extra pressure on motorists because prices for all types of fuel increase with every next hike announced in the prices.

How Motorists Can Manage their Fuel Budget?

Fuel prices have been increased thirteen times since the start of 2016 till September 2017. This clearly highlights a need to explore ways that can help motorists in reducing their fuel expenses.

Listed below are different practices that can be adopted to minimize fuel expenses in the UAE.

Buying an Electric or Hybrid Vehicle

Buying an electric or hybrid vehicle is the best possible option to minimize the fuel expenses. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are a better option as they bring down the fuel expenses to a bare minimum because they use electric batteries instead of a traditional combustion engine that needs fuel for working. On the other hand, hybrids use two powertrains, one of which is a combustion engine and the other is either an electric battery or any other source of energy. Hybrids also reduce the fuel expenses as they require lesser fuel as compared to conventional vehicles.

Some of the best EVs and hybrids of 2017 are listed below:

  • BMW i3
  • Toyota Prius Prime
  • Tesla Model X
  • Tesla Model S
  • Volkswagen e-Golf
  • Lexus CT
  • KIA Soul EV
  • Hyundai Ioniq
  • Ford Focus Electric
  • Chevrolet Volt

Buying Fuel-efficient Vehicles

Other than hybrid and electric vehicles, people in the UAE can also look to buy fuel-efficient vehicles that are equipped with an advanced powertrain that gives a better fuel average, both in cities and on the highways. Fuel-efficient vehicles are now available in all vehicle segments even including SUVs and Pickup trucks.
