Illegal parking or parking in non-designated areas is a bad practice because it can result in serious traffic problems. Sharjah Police have warned the motorists against illegal parking and announced serious penalties for this offence.

The instances of illegal parking increase in the month of Ramadan as people try to avoid the parking fee by illegally parking their vehicles near mosques during “Taraweeh Prayers.” This is a serious offence and Sharjah Police is spreading pamphlets among the motorists in different languages to create awareness about safe and legal parking in the emirate.

Penalties for Illegal Parking in Sharjah

Illegal parking in Sharjah can cost motorists heavily with fines up to AED 700 and 4 black points against their driving license. Motorists can be penalized with AED 500 fine and four black points for illegal parking as per the “Article 41 of the Traffic Law.” Motorists can also face a fine of AED 200 for blocking the way of other vehicles according to the “Article 67 of the Traffic Act.”

The Director of the Traffic Awareness Department at Sharjah Police, Major Abdul Rahman Khater stated that motorists try to avoid the parking fee and park their vehicles in non-designated areas, which block the way of emergency vehicles and other vehicles on the road. He also warned motorists of illegal parking and told that parking in non-designated areas can cause serious traffic jams and can hence cause dangerous road situations in Sharjah.

Traffic Authorities intensify their Efforts to Educate Motorists

Traffic authorities in Sharjah have intensified their efforts to stop motorists from committing parking violations. Authorities have started to distribute pamphlets in different languages including Arabic, English and Urdu to aware everyone in the emirate about the importance of parking in designated areas only.

General Parking Tips for Safe and Legal Parking

Illegal parking can also result in physical damage to an improperly parked vehicle. Motorists looking to avoid hefty parking fines and keep their cars safe from physical damages caused by parking in non-designated areas must always park their cars legally.

Here are few general tips that all motorists can follow to park their cars legally:

  • Parking in non-designated areas outside mosques must be avoided.
  • Opt for parking your vehicle at a distant spot legally instead of blocking the way of other vehicles by parking improperly near your destination.
  • Follow the parking rules and don’t try to avoid the parking fee, even if you are looking to park your vehicle for a few minutes.
  • Park your vehicle properly by making use of the space available to you. Vehicles that are half-in, half-out obstruct the way of other vehicles.
  • Don’t park your vehicle on the pavements outside the malls and shopping centres. Most of the malls in the UAE only charge parking fee after a certain time limit for parking.
  • Don’t park your vehicle at pedestrian crossings, tunnels, bridges or footpaths.
  • Don’t park your vehicle in areas where you will impede the way of other parked vehicles. If parking bays are not marked, a distance of one meter must be left between parked vehicles and vehicles should be parked in a way that they face the direction of travel.
  • Avoid parking your vehicle at public transport stations or near intersections.

Parking improperly can cause serious traffic problems and can be very dangerous, especially when an illegally parked vehicle blocks the way of emergency vehicles. Motorists should consider following the above-mentioned tips and be considerate while parking their vehicles as this will help them avoid dangerous traffic situations and heavy fines in Sharjah.
