Five months into 2017 and it has proved to be a good year for the traffic authorities in Sharjah in terms of a noticeable decrease in road accidents and violations committed by motorists. Traffic authorities all across the UAE have been busy in improving the road safety situation by arranging multiple awareness campaigns for motorists and by improving the monitoring and road surveillance standards to penalize the reckless motorists strictly.

The significant drop of 22% in traffic violations recorded in first five months of this year in Sharjah is a sign of an improved overall road safety situation in the UAE as a 25% drop in road fatalities in the first two months of 2017 was earlier observed in Abu Dhabi. These figures are encouraging particularly because 2016 was a bad year for road safety in the UAE as the number of road deaths increased significantly.

Efforts made by Sharjah Police to Improve Road Safety

In recent times, Sharjah Police has mainly emphasized on the importance of educating motorists about traffic regulations through different awareness campaigns. These awareness campaigns by Sharjah Traffic Police have been part of a strategic plan of the Ministry of Interior to improve the road safety situation substantially all over the UAE. The main objective of this plan is to reduce road accidents and fatalities which have been caused by reckless driving behavior of motorists.

Run-over accidents have been a major worry for traffic authorities in Sharjah and to reduce the number of run-over accidents, Sharjah Police has increased its road surveillance of residential areas and major roads in commercial zones. With increased patrolling, the situation has improved as reckless motorists who break the speed limits of different roads in Sharjah are penalized on the spot with serious fines and black points against their license. Furthermore, in order to minimize the hard shoulder violations on roads, Sharjah Police has installed new and advanced radars on all the important roads.

In order to reach out to a larger audience, Sharjah Police has also made active and productive use of social media platforms to raise awareness regarding traffic rules and regulations.
