There are a number of traffic violations which can lead to impounding of a vehicle in Dubai. Motorists in Dubai are continually warned against committing serious traffic violations like over-speeding, street-racing and driving without a valid license. Such violations posing a threat to the lives of people can cause your vehicle to be impounded for varying duration.

We shall discuss here few important violations which can actually lead to impounding your vehicle in the Dubai:

Street-Racing

If you are found guilty of street-racing in Dubai, your car will immediately be impounded. In August 2015, The Vice-President and the Prime Minister of the UAE, His Highness, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum issued the authority to the Dubai Police back in August 2015 to impound the vehicles caught for street-racing. The step was taken as a result of an alarming increase in the number of accidents recorded because of street-racing.

Impact of the Move

The step taken by the Government and Dubai Police to impound the vehicles for street-racing and issue heavy fines on the motorists has played a great role in decreasing the number of vehicles impounded. The number has decreased from 11,355 impounded vehicles in March 2015 to 2814 vehicles in March 2016. The traffic fines for street racing are Dh 100,000 for cars and Dh 50,000 for the quad bikes.

Driving Under the Influence of Drugs

Your vehicle can also get impounded if you are found driving under the influence of drugs or Alcohol. The effect of drugs leads to careless driving which is one the major causes of road accidents in the UAE.

Standing in the Middle of the Road

Motorists standing in the middle of the road will also find their vehicles getting impounded. This is a serious traffic violation as it disturbs the whole traffic flow.

Vehicle with Unregistered Number Plate

If you are driving a vehicle that lacks a registered number plate, it will be impounded by the Dubai Police. It is totally against the traffic laws to drive such vehicles.

Expired Registration of the Vehicle

Vehicles with their registration expired will also be impounded. A relaxation period of three months is given to the motorists in the UAE to get their vehicle’s registration renewed but if they fail to do so, their vehicle will be impounded.

Too Many Fines and Black Points against the License

In case, you are convicted for too many traffic fines and black points against your licenses, there is every chance that your vehicle will be impounded. In order to make the motorists more responsible while driving, the Dubai Police is also impounding vehicles of the habitual offenders.

Impounding Duration and the 2016 Vehicle Impounding Stats

The director of the traffic department Col. Al Mazroui said that the vehicles can be impounded for the violation of any of the 31 traffic rules. The majority of the vehicles have been impounded for a 60 days period in Dubai. According to the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police, a total of 10,835 vehicles had been impounded from January to the month of April in 2016. It is high time for motorists to become more aware of the hazards of committing traffic violations in order to save themselves from the serious penalties especially the impounding of their vehicles.
