1,837 Motorists Speeding Over 200km/h Caught in Abu Dhabi in 2016

Road accidents are a major dilemma of not only Abu Dhabi but also of all other major cities of the UAE. The traffic problems seem to aggravate consistently as the number of motorists caught for speeding over 200Km/h in Abu Dhabi has risen to 1,837 so far in 2016. According to the latest estimates of the traffic authorities, the number of road fatalities has increased massively in the recent times in Abu Dhabi. It is mainly due to reckless drivers not respecting the speed limits on various roads. On the other hand, there is a decrease observed in the number of road accidents in Dubai which is a positive sign.

Road Accidents and their Reasons

There are various reasons for the traffic problems in the UAE. People from all over the world come to the UAE for different purposes like Business, jobs and education. The lack of understanding of the traffic rules and driving ethics escalates the risk of road accidents. Above that, the carelessness of the drivers especially the young drivers is worsening the situation of traffic in the country.

Following are the chief factors responsible for road accidents caused by over-speeding and other violations in the Abu Dhabi:

Reckless Driving by young Drivers

The young drivers aged between 22 to 30 years have caused 21 road deaths according to the latest figures from the traffic authorities. This is a high percentage when compared to the 12 deaths caused by people aged between 31 and 39 years. The motorists above 40 and below 50 years of age have been found guilty of causing seven road deaths. Young Drivers are usually found involved in driving beyond the speed limits and putting multiple lives in danger.

Lack of Concentration while Driving

According to the Ministry of the Interior, a large number of road accidents (19%) in the last year resulted from the lack of attention while driving. Accidents occurred mostly due to the use of smartphones. Taking selfies and use of smartphones for internet surfing was the main reason for driving distractions.

Steps Taken by Authorities to Solve Traffic Issues

Traffic authorities in the UAE are focusing on maximizing the strictness in traffic fines and penalties in order to discourage the motorists from committing dangerous violations. The Abu Dhabi Police recently announced to drop the 50% discount on traffic fines to make motorists more responsible for their actions.

Sharjah Police has been busy in bringing new technologies to the contention including the special radars to catch multiple violations. The Dubai traffic authorities have also introduced new radars to catch hard shoulder violations. Many other new technologies have been established to improve the state of the UAE Traffic but the motorists are the ones who need to understand their responsibilities and play their part in reducing the road accidents. Over-speeding and Lane Swerving are the fundamental violations leading to fatal road accidents. Motorists need to be careful as the Abu Dhabi Police is treating the over-speeding violations with severe penalties and tightening their mechanism to catch the offenders.
