Adaptive Traffic Signal Control Systems are to be set up across a great swathe of Abu Dhabi in a bid to effectively control the flow of traffic and prevent gridlocks in the city.

According to Acting Director of Traffic Management Technology at the DoT, Hamad Al Afeefi, the system will primarily rely on current information, such as the number of vehicles at a given intersection, to properly distribute traffic the integrated network of systems means that traffic signal timings are optimised.

To combat the high rate of deaths resulting from road accidents, Hamad Al Afeefi encouraged the use of smart technology in vehicles and roads.

Dr Adnan Rahman, director-general of the International Road Federation said, “Some of the main uses of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are to promote safe driving in traffic, prevent unsafe driving behaviour and reducing accident severity.”

This technology works in various ways to proffer security to drivers and other road users. These include electronic stability control which prevents the loss of traction during turns or sudden movements, intelligent speed control assistants which warn users when speed limits are exceeded and can automatically reduce speeds, collision avoidance systems which warn when the distance between vehicles is too short and night vision systems which assist in driving during dark conditions.

With these in-car technologies as well as the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control System, the safety on the roads of Abu Dhabi will be greatly enhanced.
