To Rival Google’s Driverless Cars, German Carmakers Eye Nokia’s Here

It’s very rare in the car history for car manufacturing companies to team up and share ideas concerning new car models to be released on the car market. There is a stiff competition between these companies because they use the same technology, features and often ideas which illegally shared among the different companies.

However, companies like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are set to join forces against the Google’s self-driving cars which has never happened before in this field of cars. These companies are preparing to launch a bid for Nokia’s comprehensive mapping service. The aim of this bid is to advance in their own self-driving car projects with one of the most accurate mapping services in the world. This improvement is will greatly improve the driverless car evaluation on the accuracy on the location of the car while on road. It’s also focused on the threat of Google’s business head on expect in the near future.

Though carmakers face a fear of Google creating an open-source operating system that is free for companies to modify according to their preferences. This was witnessed in the field of phones where the different phone manufacturers use android as their operating system. Here makes up one of the three remaining divisions at Nokia after the company sold its mobile handset branch to Microsoft last year. It’s noted that talks between here and carmakers have reached an advanced stage with stalks and prices to be mentioned.

Here has Baidu, a program  whose intention is to create a high definition map of China to aid Chinese users who travel around China. This  a great opportunity for Nokia to highly gain from the partners in the car making business since over 80% of the cars have a navigation system on the dashboard use HERE’s maps. Nokia has made most of the money from the division by selling subscriptions to companies like Amazon.

Here is made up of 6000 employees in more than 200 field offices, who operate everything from data gathering and platform services, to licensing and aerial photography. This team has embarked on creating new maps which will be a great creation of reality, using lasers to create 3D models to be implemented in the navigation systems in cars.
