50% Discount on Traffic Fines Removed by Abu Dhabi Police

Abu Dhabi Police has revoked the automatic 50% discount on all traffic fines in its bid to make Abu Dhabi a safe city for commuters. The Abu Dhabi Traffic Police had planned to revoke discounts on traffic fines in May 2016 when an alarming increase in road deaths was observed in first quarter of 2016. The traffic authorities and Police have now announced to revoke discounts from all traffic fines from 1st of August 2016. Motorists in Abu Dhabi will now have to be more careful as there would be no discount available on the traffic offences.

Major Reasons Behind Revoking Discount on Fines

According to Traffic Police in Abu Dhabi, motorists have been found guilty of committing serious traffic violations repeatedly which has left the authorities with no other option but to revoke discount on fines. Motorists seemed to have almost no fear of fines with thought of getting away with at least 50% of the amount to be paid as penalty. The 50% discount on fines was introduced in 2010.

Following are the most common road offences committed by motorists in Abu Dhabi in year 2016:

  • Over Speeding
  • Tailgating
  • Lane Swerving
  • Jumping Red Signal

The number of deaths recorded in first quarter of 2016 is 77. It is 42% more than the 54 deaths recorded last year in same time frame. The violations made by motorists are because of poor driving skills, avoiding speed limits and distracted driving. According to the Abu Dhabi Police, 1837 drivers were booked for driving a car at 200 km/h. The thought of paying fines without any discount will certainly have an impact in making motorists more responsible of their acts.

Traffic Fines on Multiple Traffic Offences

Motorists used to get an automatic discount of 50% on traffic fines but it won’t be same from 1st of August 2016. Following is the list of the most major traffic violations in Abu Dhabi along with their respective penalties:

  • Dh2,000 and 12 Black Points for Reckless Driving and Racing
  • Dh1,000 and 24 Black Points for Driving a Car without Number Plates
  • Dh1,000 and 12 Black Points for not following Speed Limits on Road
  • Dh1,000 and 12 Black Points for Dangerous Driving and Risking life of Pedestrians
  • Dh1,000 and 4 Black Points for Parking a Car in Prohibited Areas including areas dedicated for emergency vehicles, spaces left for Fire Hydrants and places classified for individuals with special needs.
  • Dh800 and 8 Black Points for Jumping Red Signal
  • Dh800 and 12 Black Points for trying to flee a Policeman

All these fines will be implemented without 50% discount from 1st of August 2016 and motorists must be aware of this change to avoid any unwanted argument with Police over fines.
